ANNABETH

ANNABETH FELT EMPTY. Percy was gone, maybe forever. She sometimes didn’t believe that he was gone, and convince herself that he was still in his room, sleeping soundlessly. It even worked sometimes. But then she would tell herself to stop kidding herself. She didn’t even try and hold the tears back.

It was two days since Percy stepped onto the chariot, and Annabeth still heard his last words echo in her head. I love you Annabeth, no matter what you do, I love you, and I’m always on your side.

Annabeth knew the others were worried about her. She knew Jason was probably feeling guilty to the core, and Piper was feeling useless. She knew that Frank was refusing to turn to animals anymore, and Hazel was trying to make her feel better, but it wasn’t working. Annabeth sometimes considered going to the underworld, maybe she could meet Percy again, but she snapped herself out of it. Percy would never forgive her for that.

The pain was unbearable. Annabeth felt like she was holding the sky again. No, not just the sky, the whole world. Her mind was killing her, always telling her the things she should have done, why Percy was gone, telling her that she was a coward. Annabeth felt exactly like that, a coward.

Secretly she knew that she couldn’t have done anything, without Piper dying, or she would have done it. Sometimes she felt anger toward Jason, for accepting the offer, but then she would just sigh. He had no choice. Annabeth half-heartedly cursed Percy’s fatal flaw, because now it really could be fatal.

Annabeth gave up eating. She knew it wouldn’t do her any good, but she didn’t have the heart to. Every day she wondered about Percy, where he was, if he was still alive, what Gaea was doing to him. Annabeth’s side was giving her a hard time, it had stopped bleeding, and Hazel had removed the dagger, but it wasn't fully healed. She didn’t spare it a glance, she felt like she didn’t deserve to be healed.

Annabeth woke up from another restless dream, she heard a knock her cabin door. She muttered a “Come in” and Leo entered. Annabeth wondered what he wanted this time. Tell her they were nearly in Rome? Ask for her laptop? Which he had been doing countless times. She looked at Leo expectantly. He had bags under his eyes, but that didn’t stop him from grinning like a madman. Annabeth wanted to tell him she wasn’t in the mood, but she couldn’t bring herself to bring the only person on the ship that seemed slightly happy down. Annabeth felt slightly resentful that Leo was happy. Percy was gone, everyone should be grieving, but that wasn’t the way things worked.

Leo glanced around Annabeth’s room, which was an exact smaller copy of her cabin at Camp Half-Blood. The shelves of books were stacked neatly, the scrolls of information rolled together, everything was in order.

Then Leo looked at Annabeth, still on her bed, and took a step back, his smile fading, as if scared she might explode. That made Annabeth suspicious as to what he was going to say.

“Okay, I’m not sure how you’re going to take this, Annabeth, but please don’t explode.”

Annabeth sighed. “What is it Leo?”

“You have to promise you won’t kill me.” Leo insisted hastily.

Annabeth promised, on the River Styx. Leo’s smile returned, stretching from ear to ear. Annabeth braced herself. She was sure that, whatever Leo did, it wasn’t that bad, but she felt like an emotional wreck. She could blow up anytime.

“Go ahead” She ordered

Leo took a deep breath, “I know where Percy is” Leo’s eyes sparkled.
