"Can we put on that fun record? The one you left here last time" She asked after a while.
Amelia swallowed hard.
"Of course" but managed to contain herself.
She picked up the record that was left underneath the record player stand. It was a vinyl by The Andrew Sisters which they both adored but for different reasons. Her grandmother loved it because it was what she referred to as "wartime music" and reminded her of the good time of the war instead of the chaos, hence the name "fun record".
Whereas Amelia's view was different. She also loved music from the war era which she had shared with Paul. He had never really taken the time to listen to it and when he did, he became infatuated. Every now and then back in Brighton they would hold 40s dance sessions, usually for the older generation, but attended regardless because they loved the sound and rhythm. However, when she arrived home from the hospital after the tour, Amelia found the Andrew Sisters record that had been sent to her by him as a parting gift. She didn't want to ruin her love for the music so she took it her Grandmothers and they danced all night long instead of crying in despair of their broken relationship. Amelia never breathed a word to her about their break up and never felt the need to, until she asked her a question.
"Are you still with that Beatle lad, Paul I think his name was?" She asked.
Amelia sighed subtly which she was a master at doing by this point, "unfortunately not Grandmother. We separated around 6 months ago actually" she said in a rather monotone pitch.
"Really! What happened?" She said oblivious to the tabloids and news stories on the television.
"It's a quite a long story," she said fiddling with her fingers "Well as you know I was on tour with them for a while,"
"Oh yes I remember that. Far to long if you ask me especially being over in America. Anyway carry on love" she said.
"And I guess it was just... to much to handle" Amelia looked up and felt defeated all of a sudden.
"You know, I thought i could do it Grandmother. I really did. But it turns out I'm just not strong enough for that sort of lifestyle. One day on the tour I was trampled to pieces almost and was sent to hospital. They had to cut the tour short after that and then... I never saw him again" she said and shook her head at the end of her sentence.
Her grandmother returned the sigh, "Amelia I'm so sorry that happened".
"It's alright, things happen I guess" she replied adjusting her position in her chair.
"I though you and Paul would be together for eternity" she smiled causing Amelia to smile back "even though I hadn't met him in person, I could tell he was a wonderful gentleman to you sweetheart".
Amelia smiled looking at the floor thinking of all the kind and caring things he would do for her. She couldn't deny that he was truly remarkable and genuinely adored her, and so did she.
"Is this why you feel unsatisfied?" She asked after a few moments.
Amelia nodded, "I keep telling myself that it's no use going back him because if I let that happen again it will be the death of me. But I feel as if something is pulling us back together some how. I just can't make my mind up Grandmother, I need to get my priorities straight".
She hummed rubbing her wrinkled chin, "do you know what I think? I believe that if the time arises then you go for it!"
"Really?" Amelia asked taken back by her enthusiastic response.
"Yes! You two are absolutely made for each other, just look at the work you've created together" she said pointing to her copy of Revolver and Amelia smiled looking at it.
"If it's right, it will happen" she said finally and Amelia had made her decision.
"Alright then. I'll see if the time comes" she said rising from her seat.
"When the time comes" her grandmother corrected.
"Hey! Don't get your hopes up!" She joker and she followed her to the door.
She picked up her coat and placed her shoes back on bracing herself for the fresh evening breeze to flow through.
"It was lovely to see you Amelia" Her frail Grandmother said enveloping her in a small embrace.
"You too, hopefully I'll see you very soon" she smiled and waved goodbye.
All that was left to do now was wait.
