Ready... If Frisk said that she was ready for this whole thing, that would have been a total lie. Telling the truth, she would have to say that she was probably the most scared she had ever been in her life, more scared than the times she might have freaked out from a spider, or more scared than moments she thought were the most terrifying moments of her life. This was probably... Well, it was up there. Calling it the MOST scary moment of her life, was probably overdoing it a little. But even so, she still couldn't stop nervously fiddling with her own fingers within her lap, as Sans drove to their destination.
It felt like the journey had stretched on for hours, like it was never ending; the truth was it had only been a half hour. When gazing out towards the window, out into the dark night, Frisk could spot that the car was slowly coming to a halt, as was the two that were behind them. Slowly, Frisk glanced towards Sans, who actually looked her way in return. He looked serious, while she looked nervous. But he just gave her a small nod, as if to say "You can do this". It gave her a tiny speck of courage, but other than that, it didn't really do a whole lot as she stepped out of the car on legs that felt like they were made of spaghetti.
What didn't help is that Frisk knew she was armed. She was wearing a belt around her waist, which held her gun there. Wasn't having something on her that was meant to protect her, supposed to reassure her and make it feel safe? Because it didn't. Not at all.
Looking towards the others, she saw that they were all out of the cars. Especially Grillby, it was pretty easy to spot him out in the dark when he was made of flame, but once they got underground to sneak into their enemies base, it's not like that would really be much of a problem. Speaking of which, the group of them all began to circle around one circular drain covering, which Sans and Grillby were the first to kneel down to try and lift it out. To their surprise, it was surprisingly loose, as if it really hadn't been kept maintained very much, so it didn't require a lot of grunting to try and pull the drain cover out of the ground, but it was still heavy nonetheless, so lifting it and placing it to the side, definitely required effort without a doubt.
"Oh man, that stinks!" Frisk pointed out, which got a small chuckle out of the skeleton who seemed to be kneeling down, looking down into the dark hole.
"yeah, no kiddin'. not havin' second doubts, are ya?"
"W-What? No!" Frisk growled, before she frowned. "How are we supposed to see down there? It looks really dark..." Frisk pointed out, before Sans pointed towards Grillby, and instantly Frisk felt like an idiot. Oh, of course...
"that's what fire magic is for." Sans said, before glancing towards one of the monsters. "alright, one of ya stay up here and keep watch. make sure nothing happens to the cars." The skeleton spoke. "alright, grillby. you're up."
The flame monster silently nodded, seeming to step closer to what looked like a gaping black hole. Though, thanks to Grillby's flames, Frisk saw that the hole in the ground, actually had a ladder attached to the wall. So, getting down there might not have been too much of a problem. What if there was a lot of sewage water down there, though? Wouldn't Grillby get hurt? Or would he have magic to protect himself?
Seeming to answer her questions, the flame monster went to place himself on the ladder, slowly climbing down it. The group watched him, going further and further down, until he seemed to finally reach the bottom. "how's it goin' down there?" Sans called, as Chara, Asriel, Frisk and the others looked around carefully into the night, just in case anyone was watching them. It was hard to see further than what their eyes could make out in the blackness before them, but when they heard Grillby answer, their eyes went back to the drain.
"It's alright. It smells bad and it's a bit drippy. But it's okay." Grillby called up. Hearing that, Sans grinned towards the others, a face that seemed to say that they were ready to go.
"well, guess this is it then." Sans decided to volunteer to be the next one to climb down the ladder, and just like they had with Grillby, they waited for him to reach the bottom. The sound of his shoes touching a slightly wet surface could be heard, and it was clear to the skeleton that the floor was slightly grossly wet. But luckily, it wasn't too much of a problem that it would harm Grillby.
One by one, the rest of the group followed, before one of the monsters went to pull the cover back over them, covering it up so no one discovered the open drain. Chara and Asriel definitely looked grossed out while trying to hold their noses. It wasn't exactly a very pleasant smell down here. "Okay, which way before I vomit?" Chara wondered.
"this way." Sans pointed their way forward, before he and Grillby were the two to lead the group. Frisk decided to walk beside them both, wondering what would happen if they had gotten separated from Grillby. Right now, he was their source of light down here. What if something went bad and...?
"Sans? We do have other sources of light, right?" Frisk asked. She continued when Sans rose a brow at her. "I'm just saying... If we were to get separated from Grillby..."
"oh, right. yeah, don't worry, kid. there's a reason why one of the monsters here are carrying a backpack. it's got torches in it, in case we ever need them. i mean, i didn't wanna use 'em now in case we really needed them now and somehow someone broke something." He glared towards Chara.
"Okay, that was ONE time, on ONE mission, okay?!" Chara complained, before she was shushed to keep her voice down. Frisk was puzzled.
"What did you break?" Frisk questioned.
"Um..." Chara seemed nervous. "I... Might have... Broken his collar bone at one point." Chara murmured, which shocked Frisk to her core.
"might have? the thing was totally snapped in half because of ya." Sans rolled his eyes, as Chara seemed to growl and he let out a small chuckle. Frisk couldn't help but smile at the interaction between the two, even if it was a strange story. For once they appeared as if they weren't utterly at each other's necks. For once, around each other things didn't seem so bad.
Frisk was just glad that this whole conversation was keeping her off the stench of the sewers, and she hoped that they were getting closer to where they had to be. She was sure they probably parked the cars a little further away from the building, so they might be down here for a little while, trying to find their way inside the base.
She had high hopes though. Maybe this would go well.
