Both Sherlock and John were afraid of the dark, but neither of them had ever told the other.

John was afraid because of his time spent at war, darkness meant not being able to see the enemy, and not knowing what was coming.

Sherlock was afraid because he couldn't see anything, and he relied on sight to tell him what was coming, or what was going on.
