Archie and I sneak around the house, disabling the cameras. He has to keep me at least a couple of feet within him or else I will become visible.
We give Harry and Leslie the go-ahead and they all line up next to me, waiting for me to hoist them up with my mind.
"I hope I don't accidentally overcompensate the height and launch you guys across the property," I joke.
Archie's face visibly pales. "What!"
"Shh, I'm just kidding."
Leslie tries not to burst out laughing.
Harry rolls his eyes. "Can we please hurry? Personally, I don't want to die tonight."
I focus on him and send him up and over the glass railing on the balcony. He lets out a muffled cry.
I turn to Archie with one eyebrow raised.
He looks panicked. "Give me a heads up before-"
I roll my eyes and send him over.
"They are such babies," Leslie says with tears of laughter in her eyes.
I sigh. "Tell me about it. Up you go."
She strikes a superman pose as she flies up.
I chuckle and levitate myself up. Everyone is standing and ready to go inside.
"On second thought, I don't think we should split up," I say nervously. "That never ends well for anyone."
"We'll be fine," Harry replies. "It's four against one."
"Can't you use your mind thingy to find out where he is?"
He thinks about it. "I'm not used to going into his mind. I don't know if I'll be able to penetrate it easily. He could be trained to block his mind from people like me or he'll figure out I'm inside."
"Can you at least try?" I plead. "I have a bad feeling about this."
He stares at me and then looks at Archie and Leslie.
Archie shrugs. "It doesn't hurt to try."
Harry closes his eyes and we fall silent. I'm guessing he needs to be extra concentrated to do this.
I walk to the balcony doors. They're also made of glass and when I peer into the room, I find that it's empty just like Leslie said. I turn the handle. Locked. I stare at it and it falls out of the door. I catch it before it hits the ground and gives us all away.
Leslie quickly taps her foot impatiently which I find a tad irritating.
Harry's eyes finally open. I know by the look on his face that he didn't get through to Edward. "Nothing."
I draw in a shaky breath. "Splitting up it is, then."
The four of us walk inside. There is a gray and white king size bed in the room, and the nightstand beside it is made out of glass. Come to think of it, a lot of this house has glass in it. Sounds dangerous. We look through the room to see if we can find anything of importance.
"There's nothing here," Leslie sighs.
"What time is it?" Archie asks.
I look at the digital clock on the nightstand. "1:17." I take a look around. I can't see anyone since we are all invisible and it's a bit unnerving. I feel someone touch my hand and jump.
"It's me," Harry assures me.
"Oh, you scared me."
"Listen, Y/N..." he starts.
"I know, I know. I will be careful and not be seen."
"I don't know what I would do if you got hurt again. I barely survived the last time," he whispers.
I glide my hands up to his face and find his mouth with my fingers. I guide his head down and his lips find mine. My tongue slips into his mouth as he kisses me deeply.
"I'll be okay. Don't worry," I say after we pull apart.
"Come on guys. I want to be home before breakfast," Leslie comments.
"You and me both," I tell her.
We tiptoe to the door and I open it carefully with my mind so it doesn't make a sound. I look to my left and to my right. There isn't anyone in the long hallway.
"Leslie and I will take the right," Harry says. "You and Archie will go left."
I nod my head even though he can't see me and let out a shaky breath. I grab onto Archie's shirt so I won't lose him. We walk down and when I turn around, Harry and Leslie are slowly starting to visibly reappear.
I have a bad feeling in my stomach as Archie and I walk through the hall. The past four doors we have opened have either been a study, a library, a bathroom, or a game room. After some twists and turns, we come across a door different from the others.
My pulse spikes. "Do you think..."
"Yeah," Archie whispers, "this is it."
My hand reaches towards the handle.
Archie jerks me back, as if sensing what I was about to do. "Wait! We can't do anything yet. We have to tell the Harry and Leslie."
"Oh, right. You go ahead I'll wait for you guys here or in one of the rooms."
"We need to stick together. That was the plan."
"We don't need two messengers," I quietly snap. "Look, just go. I'll be fine and so will you. They won't even see you coming."
He huffs. "Okay. But don't do anything stupid. Go inside the library or something."
"I will. Now go." I give him a little push. I hear his footsteps speeding away.
I can slowly start to see my fingers and feet. Soon, I'm completely visible. I take a step towards the library and stop. Archie said that we should all be here, but what if they get hurt. We don't know what second power Edward has. If he even has one.
I take a deep breath. I should just finish it now. This started with me and I am the one who needs to end it. By myself without anyone getting hurt. My hand rests on the handle and I twist it open.
Everything in the room is dark as I creep towards the center of the from where a huge bed rests. There is a figure laying underneath the covers that slowly move up and down with every breath.
My heart is pounding in my chest. This is it. It's now or never.
I creep around to the other side so I can look at Edward's face when he sees that I'm still alive.
I rip the covers off of him, like a bandaid. I realize a fraction of a second too late that maybe I won't be able to protect my mind from being tricked by him.
His eyes open sleepily and close again. They shoot open when his mind registers who I am.
