Charon

My bones ached as I laid on the ground. The streaming river beside me numbed my tongue as soon as I made contact with it. Suddenly a cloaked figure appeared above me. I tried to sit up and make out the shadow that loomed over me but before i could say anything the dark blur spoke. The voice was deep but did not sound like a man. In fact, it did not even sound human.

I've heard so much about you, Rastus. Obviously no one would ever bother to place a coin upon your lips, However I will permit you to ride my ferry; but only because I'm amused by your motives. Do not question me. I am here to question you.

My vision was returning and the figure was motioning to a wooden raft. I nodded and ever so slowly stepped onto the vessel so I would not fall in the water. I couldn't exactly comprehend everything that was going around me, so I just closed my eyes and remained silent. The distorted voice emerged from the cloak.

Do you think that you are some sort of god? Are you really that arrogant?

"Arrogance?" I blurted out, dumbfounded, "I swear I'm not like that!"

Oh really? Then why would a commoner like you ever try to go against Hades? What makes you think that you were so special?

"I never said that I was special or anything. Why do you want to question me? Who are you?"

I am Charon, you ignorant mortal. No further questions from here. But I really do want to know why you would ever do what you did. I never get to see any trials when they take place. So Rastus, why did you ever try to challenge one of the most temperamental god there is?

"It was for Persephone! She did not deserve the fate she was given! To be imprisoned in a place as horrible as this for all eternity..."

Charon snickered at my comment. Do you not see how irrational you are? YOU are going to be imprisoned here for all eternity.

"But you see, I guess I would deserve it. Persephone didn't. She's too innocent."

Stop trying to patronize the great goddess. She is much more capable than someone like you.

"But-" I stuttered.

You are impossible to talk to. Hopefully you will be much more respectful at the trial than you are here. Thankfully this ride is almost over.

The boat slowly came to a stop. I opened my eyes and Charon pointed towards the gates to Tartarus.

You will have to cross Cerberus' path. Be wary and do not provoke the beast. After that your trial will commence. I am positive the judges must be excited to look at your case. You are bound to receive a horrible punishment. I wish I could see what the judges will wish upon you. Alas I am just a simple ferryman.

Before I could respond Charon went atop his ferry and started to row away.
