The world flash forwarded to a scene with Near in Roger's office. Roger told Near that L had died at the hands of a serial killer he was chasing, known as Kira.
Mello felt shook up at hearing this, and pissed at Near's response, which was to calmly call L a loser.
"You piece of shit, Near," He hissed.
Roger continued speaking.
"Since Mello is gone, you will be L's successor."
Matt was number two in the rankings now and could have assisted Near but wasn't interested. He had fallen into depression since he'd never made friends or found any reason to live. He still felt the loss of Mello's death, despite not having known him. In the end they shared the same fate, when Matt took a gun and shot himself.
