Annabeth left the lab. Tony and Banner were going along just fine, and she needed some business done. Percy was hitting it off with Tony, and Thor and Fury were chit-chatting about the end of the world. Annabeth looked for Natasha. But as she neared Loki's cell room, her earpiece suddenly flickered to life.
"Agent Romanoff here. Loki plans to unleash the Hulk. Keep Banner in the lab, I'm on my way."
Annabeth changed her course and began to walk briskly back to the lab. Footsteps met hers, and Natasha walked up from the side.
"What was that about?" Annabeth asked as they headed up the stairs.
"I just interrogated Loki," Natasha said stiffly. "Nothing to it, really."
"But you revealed his plans."
"At a price." She looked at Annabeth. "Whatever Loki was doing in there... whatever he was biding his time for, allowing us to prepare, that moment of peace is over. We're acting, he's acting. Are you ready?" She asked.
Annabeth grinned a wolfish grin. "When you are, Agent Romanoff."
They entered the lab right behind Thor and immediately faced a chaotic scene that definitely was not how Annabeth left the lab.
"There you are, Annabeth." Tony walked briskly over and clapped Annabeth on the shoulder.
Fury turned back to Steve. "Rogers, we gathered everything related to the tesseract. But," he looked at the bulky gun on the table. "That does not mean—"
"I'm sorry, sir," interrupted Percy from his seat next to Banner. He flipped the screen around, and a diagram of a lethal-looking missile design appeared. "What were you lying?" He asked quietly.
"Did you know about this?" Banner asked Natasha, eyes narrowing.
"You might want to think of removing yourself from this environment, Doctor," Natasha warned.
Banner laughed acidly. "I was in Calcutta. I was pretty well removed. Well now I'm here and I'm not leaving because you get a little twitchy. I'd like to know why S.H.I.E.L.D. is using the tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction."
Everyone looked at Fury, who inhaled deeply.
"Because of them." He pointed to Thor, Percy, and Annabeth.
"What?" Annabeth demanded.
"Us?" Thor pointed to himself.
"Why?" Percy asked, bewildered.
"Last year, earth had a visitor from another planet," Fury began. "They had a grudge match that leveled a small town. And before that, our records on the Mount St. Helens eruption? Completely rewritten and re-analyzed at the information that it was a fifteen year old teenage boy. The explosion at the Gateway Arch. The near destruction of the Empire State. The freak storms across the country. Not only are we not alone in the galaxy, there are people of immense power living here in New York. S.H.I.E.L.D. and humans are hopelessly, hilariously outgunned. There was too much uncontrolled power, and it was being released at us."
"My people want nothing but peace with your planet," Thor interrupted.
"But they're proof that you're not the only people out there," Fury cut sharply. "Not even out there, they were in here. In Manhattan." He looked around at everyone. "The world is filling up with people who can't be matched, can't be controlled."
"Oh, like you you controlled the cube?" Steve asked waspishly.
"Your work with the tesseract is what drew Loki and his allies to Earth in the first place," Thor growled. "It is a signal to all the realms that Earth is ready for a higher form of war."
