First Grade

Lance grabbed a box of crayons from his pencil box, and ran up to the teacher a small smile on his face, his eyes wide with excitement.

"Mrs. Sanchez?" Lance asked shyly all the excitement drained out of his eyes now replaced with fear. Mrs. Sanchez looked away from her computer and looked down at Lance, chucking fondly when Lance looked down to his feet, shuffling them side to side.

"Can I have a piece of paper?" Lance whispered. Mrs. Sanchez smiled.

"Of course you can! What are you going to do with it?"

Lance looked up from the floor, smiling at his teacher, showing off his two missing teeth. "I'm going to draw my family!" he said excitedly, his eyes full of love and happiness. Mrs. Sanchez's heart melted.

"Can you show me when your done?"

The 6 year old nodded enthusiastically. "Of course!!"

And with that Lance snatched the paper out of her hand--not to rough of course, his mama didn't raise an animal--and ran back to his seat dumping the box of crayons on the table and drawing fervently. Lance loved Mrs. Sanchez, she always gave the class free time in the beginning and end of class to do whatever they want. Lance was about to draw his brother--Danny--when he heard the door to the class click open. Lance shot his head up seeing the principle and a woman standing by the door. If Lance looked closely he could see an outline of a small figure hiding behind the woman's legs. Lance's eyes went wide as saucers.

A new kid!! he thought giddily.

No Lance, he scolded himself, calm down.

But he couldn't because there was a new kid! A new friend!

Lance saw Mrs. Sanchez squat down the the new kid, smiling kindly at him. He heard her whisper a few words to him, Lance tried to lean in to hear but to know avail, the door was just too far from his desk. Lance pouted. He still leaned in though. He was too curious. Lance saw Mrs. Sanchez tell the new boy something but the boy shook his head. Mrs. Sanchez frowned. Finally she leaned closer to the boy as if telling him a secret. Lance leaned more, and stopped when he almost fell out of his chair. Lance saw the boys eyes light up and a grin made his away across his face. Too bad Lance couldn't see the boy too well. The new kid finally came out of his mother's protective stance and walked to Mrs. Sanchez.

"Thank you Mr. Robin," Mrs. Sanchez nodded at the principle, Mr. Robin nodded and left. Mrs. Sanchez turned to the woman and Lance just realized how beautiful she is--not as beautiful as his mama of course but she's a close second--because he was too preoccupied by the boy who was now standing awkwardly, close to Mrs. Sanchez.

"Don't worry Mrs. Kogane, he's in good hands."

The woman smiled and thanked her, knelling down to hug the boy, his little arms wrapping around her immediately. The woman whispered something in the boy's ears and Lance saw the boy tear up but nodded his head, his eyes full of determination.

Lance wished he could hear the conversation.

Finally the woman left, one last wave goodbye to her son, and she walked out of the classroom, closing the door behind her with a soft click.

Mrs. Sanchez walked to the front of the room, Lance's blue eyes looking at the boy the whole time. Lance saw the boy tremble and Lance concluded that the boy was very brave. He would probably pee his pants if he was a new kid. Mrs. Sanchez finally made it to the front of the room, clearing her throat to grab the classes attention, making the younger boy beside her flinch. Lance saw the boy's eyes widen with fear but Lance gasped when that fear turned to cold hard determination.
