Girls, do you remember when we were little and we would dress up like princesses? Do you remember the days when you didn’t have a care in the world? Don’t you miss those days? I know I do. It beats being woken up every morning by your nightmares. Except, my nightmares are real. And, trust me, I mean real. They’re memories that scar you for life. So, if you’re the faint-hearted, stop reading. I mean it.

Most fifteen year old girls are worried about shopping and boys. Not me. My life is dedicated to saving the ones I love. Spoiler alert: I’m a fairy. Don’t laugh. I’m serious. Now, I know when you think of fairies, you conjure up an image of girls with tight outfits, sparkly make-up, and wings. Wings? Absolutely.  Sparkly makeup and tight outfits? Make-up is the least of my worries, and tight outfits aren’t good for a fight. I can hide my wings. I only use them when I need to fly.

Now, I lean back on my heels, looking at my latest “accomplishment”. She was a pretty girl, too. I knew she was a traitor to our kind, but she was still a living, breathing creature. There’s always that guilt. Her blond hair was now red, due to her cracked skull. The blood was still trickling down. My Elders thought that it was necessary to send the Hounds on her. Those ghastly creatures. They’ve mauled her head to toe. Not that the Elders are any better.

I almost threw up at the sight of her. Her throat was ripped out, and there was a hole in her stomach. Blood poured out of her wounds, making a pool of blood surround her. Her eyes were opened wide. It looked like she was in disbelief. She was cocky, and didn’t expect a Junior Fairy to be capable of so much power. I had sent a gale toward her, knocking her into the brick wall. I knew she was dead, but those Elders thought that she could reanimate herself.

“Cecelia. Move” his voice was demanding and cold. He was the Chief Elder. The one who had so much power.

I stepped out of his way and turned around. I glanced at Jake, happy to see him alive. Yes, he is my boyfriend. Not that anyone could know. He’d be removed from his status if I got involved. Elders were only supposed to be involved with other Elders.

I know what you’re thinking. So, she’s dating an older man? Like forbidden love? Ha! Don’t get your hopes up with the whole “forbidden love” thing. He’s fifteen, but he has advanced for his age. He holds a lot of power. I would be an Elder by now, too, but I get in trouble too often. It would ruin the image. And, our society is all about image. We work things out, and have a very complicated plan to stay together. Either way, I'm trying to be on my best behavior, so that I could graduate to Elder in six months. And, trust me, all the popular girls at my school, Highlanders High for Fairies, make it really hard not to punch them.

"Cecelia, we are done here. Fly" he bellowed. God, that guy is annoying

Now, my wings are very complicated. Well, all fairy wings are very complicated. My wings stay hidden when I want them to. They stay hidden by implanting themselves to my outer skin. Like a tattoo. So, when I sprout my wings, it's a little painful. I felt a stinging pain and bit my lower lip to keep myself from screaming in agony. When they sprouted, I sighed.

Jake loved my wings. So did everyone else. For two reasons, actually. One being the color. Every fairy's wing's color is based off their element. My friend, Rebbekah's, element is fire, so they are shaped like flames, and the colors are red, black, and orange. Really pretty. I am a very... special, fairy. I don't have a element. I have all elements. Therefore, my wings are colored in an intricate design with all colors you can imagine. The other reason is that my wings are like silk. Most fairy wings are kind of scaly. But, not mine. They are silk.

I flew off into the night, loving the way the cool wind felt against my skin. Two women Elders followed me. Oh, forgot to mention this: male fairies don't have wings. Instead they are gifted with supersonic speed. Fairy wings can get you up to 110 mph. The guys can get up to 200 mph. Pretty cool, huh? That's why Jake beat me back to the school.

The school itself was magic. Not real magic, but it had an atmosphere that drew you in. The outside of the school looked like a medieval castle. Except for the fact that is was a midnight blue, not black and gray. Inside, chandeliers hung from the ceilings and sparkled with crystals.

"Jake, escort Cecelia back to her room" the Cheif Elder demanded. Apparantly, he didn't understand the word "please"

Jake nodded his head and walked me down the hall. He glanced over his shoulder and wrapped his arm around my waist. Did I mention he's almost a foot taller than me? I used to call him Skyscraper.

"Are we going back to my room?" I asked, smiling

He smirked, and my heart skipped a beat "What do you think?"

"Jake, I need to study for Ms. Herod's test tomorrow. If we want to be together, without getting you demoted, I have to pass this year"

"Cece, calm down. You'll ace the test. You throw a couple fireballs and you're done"

"It's more than that. My powers are... increasing. I was practicing last night, and that fireball burnt a gaping hole in the side of the school!"

"Really?" he sounded in awe

He still took me back to my room, though. I invited him in, but a teacher walked past us. She rose her eyebrows at Jake's presence. He explained that "Richard", the Chief Elder, ordered him to walk me back to my room. It wasn't a lie. We just didn't tell her the whole truth. She walked away, and he kissed my forehead, wishing me good dreams.

My roommate, Tiana, was still up, and smiled at what she just saw. Tiana and I are best friends, and she's one of the few people who know about my relationship with Jake.

"I say screw the image thing, and just date him publicly. You two are so cute together!" she squealed, tossing her brunette hair over her shoulder.

"You're so screwed up," I joked, "Life isn't a fairytale, Tiana. A decision like that will destroy a lot of things. Besides, we're good right now. Sneaking around is kind of... fun. I mean, sure, I wish I didn't have to hide this from everyone, but it's what I have to do"

She sighed. We all know life isn't a fairytale. And, if you think it is, sorry to break it you. Life is a roller coaster. There are ups and downs. Fairy tales are for kids, so that they have good dreams. Parents don't want their kids getting depressed that young. And, do you want to know why teenagers are so moody? It's because we grow up to believe the best in life, and then you find out life doesn't work that way. You can't always win.

I stepped into the bathroom and changed. I pinned my curly auburn hair up in a bun, and changed into my PJs. As soon as I hit the bed, I was out. Killing people takes a lot of energy, I thought bitterly. Let's see what nightmare I have tonight.

She laughed and raised her arm, pointing her ice crystals toward my heart. Dad jumped in front of me before they reached me. My Dad is human. Was human, I should say. This is a reoccurring nightmare that I know too well. It's a memory, actually. That was the day my Dad died. And, it was my fault. Everyone said that wasn't true. That you can't control fate. True, you can't, but I still take full blame for what happened.

That was also the day I discovered my powers. I had burnt that demon to a crisp. She deserved it. That was one kill I will never feel guilty about. "Use your powers for good, not evil" were my Dad's last words. Those were, also, the words that woke me up, screaming.
