I walked outside, putting my last box in the moving van. I could still hear my brother yelling from inside the house.
“I hate you guys! You realize that right?”
He screamed and screamed. My parents just ignored him. He has been saying the same thing since they first told us we were moving from a small town in Kansas to to Florida. 'My friends are here, my girlfriend is here, my LIFE is HERE!' he said over and over again.
At first, my parents tried to console him, saying he would meet new friends and he would get a new girlfriend, he was young and he would adjust. All of that was true too. My little brother is the most popular boy in the eighth grade. He plays football, basketball, and baseball, he wrestles and he runs track too. On top of that he isn't an ugly kid either. So, as you can tell, he would make friends in a heartbeat, but he just couldn't come to terms with the fact we were moving. After a while, my parents just started tuning out his cries.
My dad walked outside then and put a couple more in the van. He stopped and kissed my head.
“Are you as miserable as your brother?” he asked in a regretful voice.
I turned around to look at him. “I was born here, I grew up here, but the truth is I never liked it here. So no. I can't wait to get out of here.”
He smiled then. “At least someone is.” he said before turning around and walking back in the house.
Honestly, I sugarcoated it for him. I despise this place. I was bullied and made fun of daily. It wasn't that I was ugly, or fat, or anything like that. It was the fact that I was a 'geek'. I got straight A's. In my seventeen years of living, I have never been to a party, I have never gotten drunk, I've never tried any kind of drugs, I haven't even been out past curfew, and because of that, I've never really had many friends.
So, when I found out we were moving, I was thrilled. I couldn't wait for a fresh start in a new place. This time, I am going to live my life right. I'm not going to be the same person I am now, when we get to Florida, I am going to be a person everyone likes.
I was sitting on the truck, thinking about how much better it is going to be when I heard the door shut behind me. I looked back and saw my mom carrying a box, and my dad locking the door to my childhood house. My brother was just standing there with his hood pulled over his head and his earphones in.
My mom put the box in the truck and then got in. My dad walked off the porch and shut the back of the truck. He looked at me.
“Ready?” he asked
I nodded and walked to the car. I would be driving our car to Florida with my brother while my parents drove in the truck.
“Brad!” my dad screamed. “Brad! Get in the car.”
He looked up. He sighed so loud even I heard him. He walked down the driveway and stopped in front of my dad.
“Never, never talk to me again.” he said before opening the door and sitting down. My dad stood there for a second, then he nodded and walked over to my side of the car.
“Did you set the GPS, Megan?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright, I mean you will probably just follow us the whole way, but that is just in case.”
I nodded and he got in the truck. We were off.
