Not There

He's there but he's not there,
She's talking but he can't hear her,
No matter how loud,
He's a painted canvas to her thoughts,
Confides in everyone but who she wants him to,
He's out of his mind,
It's hard to function when California's got someone in need,
She can't tell who's more fucked up,
Him.
His friend in Cali,
Or her.
She tosses and turns all night trying to figure out how to save him
And save herself,
From the nagging feeling in the back of her mind,
She knows it shouldn't be there
She struggles everyday to save him from himself

But now he's not there.
Not just mentally,
Physically.
Out in the depths of the Tennessee valleys,
Getting treatment for problems that we weren't able to help him with.
She cries at the mention of his name.
The songs that he used to sing.
And the thought of what could've been.
But now he's not there,
For her.
For us.
