"I do not want to hear another word, missy. You get your behind out here, this instant!" I called threateningly from downstairs.
There were loud banging and shuffling of footsteps moving towards me. A sullen looking girl with messily chopped dirty blonde hair came out of her room. Her icy blue eyes stared at me, daring for me to laugh. I did want to laugh, but I kept it in. Just then, a loud obnoxious laughter was heard from the kitchen. I whipped my head around and saw the dark head of my eldest. He was grinning apologetically.
"Cole! What the hell did you do to my hair?!" 13 year old Layne screamed at her brother, tears were already threatening to spill from her icy blue eyes. She charged towards her 15 year old brother, who upped and dashed towards the living room, missing Layne's hold. She screamed in frustration as her quick brother escaped from her.
"Hey, what's going on?!" I asked in exasperation. The upper east penthouse was echoing with the sounds if Layne's angry screams and Cole's laughter.
"Mom, you see what Cole did to my hair!!" Layne came up to me and showed me her hacked-off, lopsided mop of dirty blond hair. She looked like a Raggedy Anne doll gone punk. She was openly crying now. I turned to Cole for answers. He put up both hands to his chest, in a feeble attempt to pacify me.
"It was an accident. She wanted me to trim her split ends. While I was cutting her hair, she went and sneezed. So, I accidentally cut off a huge chunk instead of a lock. I'm so, so sorry Layne..really sorry!" Cole begged as he looked guilty.
"Now, why in the world are you cutting her hair, Cole?" I asked in amazement.
"Well, I like cutting hair. I've been cutting Layne's hair for years, mom.And even my friends' hair. Since I was 12, mom. Oh my God, you don't even know your own son!" Cole said dramatically. I rolled my eyes.
"Now what am I going to do!? Tomorrow's picture day, you moron! Mom!" Layne cried dramatically as she threw herself in my arms. She's almost my height and almost clobbered me. I patted her on the back while giving Cole the evil eye. Cole looked helplessly at me.
"Hey everybody, I'm home!" Caleb came in through the front door, carrying his luggage, and looking a little tired. But his outrageous good-looks still took my breath away. Layne bounded to her father and threw herself in his arms, all dramatic and theatrical. He looked a little winded and chuckled as he caught her.
" Hey, what's going on? Why are you crying?" Caleb asked in confusion.
"Cole chopped off my hair..." Layne said pathetically and wailed. Caleb looked at me. I shrugged. Then he furrowed his eyebrows when his gaze fell on Cole. Cole just shrugged apologetically.
"Come on, honey. You don't look that bad. This is kinda..err..edgy." Caleb said reluctantly. Layne wailed louder.
"Okay, okay. I'll take you to get it fixed. Come on. Let's go. The salon is just a block away. Here, wear my beanie." Cole said as he went close to Layne. She sniffled and glared at him, but she let him take her arm and guide her to the front door. Cole said goodbye to me and Caleb and both of them were gone. Caleb dropped his luggage on the floor and went to me, smirking. My heart beat faster, still after all these years.
Then I was engulfed in Caleb's strong embrace. He kissed my temple and then my lips tenderly. I responded eagerly. He had been away for a week training the US Olympics team. After competing in two more Olympics, Caleb finally retired from competing and is now the Head Coach of the US Olympics Swim Team. So, there are times that he had to travel, but he never stayed for more than a few weeks, the longest. He had a good solid coaching team that does most of the training.
"I missed you, baby," Caleb murmured against my temple. I shivered deliciously when he started kissing my neck.
"We can't..the kids..dinner..." I protested feebly.
"They'll be gone for a while. I can be done in half an hour," Caleb murmured as he slipped his hands under my top.
"Yeah, that's a turn on," I said teasingly and Caleb chuckled, realizing what he had said.
"Dara called. She and Alex are coming next week for dinner." I said breathlessly. Alex and Dara are married and blessed with 12 year old twin girls and a 9 year old boy.
" K..." Caleb said, not really paying attention. He was too busy throwing off his jacket and pushing me towards our bedroom.
And I let him. Damnit, I missed him too. I hope we'll be happy forever. If I could go back and change anything, I wouldn't change a thing. Not even one thing.
