Though it is not directly confirmed, it has been rumored that cats become medicine cats because they're gay. When you choose the path of a medicine cat, you're not allowed to love other cats, so it probably would be to avoid sticky situations when finding a mate. (This may also be proof because of the way Leafpaw(Leafpool) thinks of Mothwing in their first few encounters.)
