(((((((((((((((((((((((((((Chapter Three))))))))))))))))

We woke up late the next morning. I put a fresh bandage on Jacob's leg, it wasn't bleeding anymore, but I was a little worried about infection, the hospital was 10km from here.

We ate fruit for breakfast.

" Have you ever tried to ride a zebra?" He asked while we scoffed down some fruit. I practically glared at him. Why would I. It would kill me or buck me off. I didn't know how to ride anyway.
" Come on, it'll be fun," he said winking and throwing his pips into the ocean before hoisting himself up. I stayed on the floor, leaning against the mast.
He rummaged around for a while until he found a strong long rope and gloves, and hammer. I frowned at him.
" Why do we need all that?" I asked.
" you'll see," he winked, flexing his muscles. I tried not to blush and I rolled my eyes, climbing down the ladder, he threw the stuff down, almost hitting me on the head with a hammer, and climbed down.
I yelled at him for almost hitting me, but he only laughed and ruffled my hair. He was extremely sweet, but annoying, like having a little brother I think.
" Ok so, there is a water hole just over there, almost all animals, all kinds, come down here to drink, so be on your toes for lions and stuff," I said we were hiding in the thick bushes near the waterhole, we had a clear view of the whole thing.

A small herd of zebras appeared on the edge of the water hole. We looked at each other, nodded and got into our positions. Jacob was behind them, he was going to crack a whip so they would run along the bank, hopefully. Then I would throw a rope out and catch one, tying it to a tree. We had one chance.

I took a deep breath and waited for the crack of the whip. It was extremely loud and thundering hooves pounded towards me. I locked myself onto the tree and readied my rope. They began to appear and I threw it, it looped around a zebra's neck and I was almost pulled out of the tree! I used all my strength but it failed and the old rope snapped and the prize galloped over to the herd. I looked at Jacob and shrugged. He shrugged back and we went back to the boat.
" Well that failed," he laughed.
" You think?" I smirked. He smiled back at me and continued to eat his lunch.
" So what do you want to do for the rest of the day?" I shrugged. He shrugged back.
" Want to play a game?" He suggested. I narrowed my eyes at him.
" What kind of game?" I asked slowly. He smirked,
" whatever game you want to," he smirked wriggling his eye brows at me. I laughed and slapped him. He did a mock hurt face that made me laugh more.
We settled for a game of chess, we made a board and used pebbles as the pieces, it was failing miserably.
" Shotgun," He winked.
" It's not shotgun you idiot! It's check mate," I laughed. He shrugged. I moved my king away. He checkmated me again. This continued before I surrendered. He was really good at this game.

It was late and we had gone to bed. I dreamt about a day when we wouldn't have to hide anymore. We would live next door, and we would have normal lives, with safety, no more death, no more sadness, no more... Escaping. I woke up in the middle of the night, the dream kind of scared me, I hadn't had a dream like that since I turned 12, two years ago. Jacob was giving me hope, and I wasn't sure if that was good for me.

" Come on, we need food, come on, I can't hunt on my own!" I heard Jacob say, trying to wake me up. I thought of a plan, smirking inside. Then, suddenly, I leapt on top of him with a loud warrior cry. He stumbled back and fell over. I laughed and hopped up, brushing myself off.
" Well come on then!" I smiled sweetly. Shrugging and loading myself with weapons. He mumbled something about girls and hurried after me. We went back to the waterhole to look for food.
" What's on the menu chef?" Jacob whispered into my ear, his hand on my shoulder. I hid a blush and shrugged.
" Whatever's here," I replied, shrugging him off. I had made him a bow and some arrows the night before.

A small family of pigs trotted into view, normally they would be warthogs, but these were actual pigs! We were hiding in the trees. I turned to Jacob and nodded, he slid down the tree and heading into position. As soon as I saw him up in the tree on the other side I grabbed my knife, there was a net hanging off the tree I was on. All I had to do was cut the rope when the pigs ran under, much much easier said than done.

I nodded to him and he let out a loud whistle, startling the pigs. Then he shot the ground just behind them, turning them towards me. I breathed deeply and clutched my knife. On the way here, Jacob shot one of the pigs and it was stumbling, the sooner we out it out of its misery, the better. They flung left, right towards me. 100 meter, 50, 20, 5. I tore at the rope and it sailed down, catching the injured pig, it squirmed and I leapt down the tree, pinning it and waiting for Jacob, I had to make sure that he was ok. I refused to look at the pig, even 3 years of killing, you never get use to the panicked look in their eyes. He arrived and I slit it's throat. I sang to it as it drifted off, I had that habit now, I sang to them, they seemed to calm down if I sang. Jacob watched the scene with his head cocked to the side. I looked at him and he shrugged, taking his arrow back. I picked up the pig and Jacob took the net. There was a low rumbling sound. I looked at Jacob, my eyes wild with fear. He gulped, we both knew what that was.

We slowly back out of the bush, into the open. Only to hear another low rumble. I squeezed my eyes shut and prayed that it would be over fast.
" Throw the pig," Jacob hissed.
" What?" I asked
" Throw the bloody pig, they want the bloody pig now give it to them," he hissed. I gulped and threw it. I heard it land. Nothing happened. There was a snarl and one of them stepped into view. The lioness towered over us, I gulped.

3...2...1..

" Run!!" Jacob screamed as one of the lions leapt. He shoved me out of the way and pushed me forward. We ran so fast all I could see was a blur. Jacob was at my side, gritting his teeth and sprinting. Suddenly he grabbed onto a branch and swung round, whacking the lion in the face. It gave a roar of surprise and stumbled. Jacob sprinted ahead of me, grabbing my hand. I was dragged through the thick bush, the lions found it hard the get through, so it bought us some time. My heart thumped so loud inside my chest I thought I was going to burst. The bush cleared and there was a clearing, nowhere to hide. I looked around my eyes filled with fear. I stopped at tree.

" Over there, hurry!" I yelled, running for the tree, just as we started running again the lions bolted out of the bushes. I screamed and leapt onto the tree, scrambling up. I grabbed Jacob and began to pull him up, so close, so so close.

A lion swiped it's large paw at him and caught him all across his chest. He yelled out and I struggled to pull him up. I did and rested him against the tree. His was clutching his belly, he had such bad luck, that was going to scar, badly. I looked around frantically, and that's when I stopped it, the leopard. Casually licking at its paws, ignoring the angry lions. All the wind was sucked out of me, I froze up, this never happens, but I froze, I didn't know what to so.
" Please help me," Jacob wheezed, between coughs. I ripped off my sleeves and began to tie them around him. They weren't enough; soon the blood had soaked through.
" I'm sorry Jacob, I'm so sorry, what can I do," I cried. We were going to get eaten; he was probably more better off dying on the boat.
But when he looked at me, it was a look full of love and sorrow.
" Thankyou for everything. Thankyou so much," he said, his coughs getting worse. He was wheezing hard and squirming, I held him onto the tree, he couldn't fall, I would rather fall into the pit of angry lions.

Slowly but surely, he fell unconscious. The leopard started growling. I gulped how do I get out of this one? With hardly any thought I had slung Jacob over me and jumped out of the tree. The lions were long gone, I needed to get back to the ship. I trudged along, his weight making me trip and stumble. But after a long time I finally made it. I leapt up the ladder and grabbed some more towels, ripping them and leaping back down to Jacob. It was still bleeding, I could feel the blood starting to dry on my back. I bandaged him up tightly, making sure it was really thick so he wouldn't bleed out.
