--Six Years Later--
I'm 18. Why did I have to get old so fast. Okay, I know 18 isn't that old but I'm one of the last kids to turn 18. In a couple weeks all the kids in my residence will be 18. That means in a couple weeks we will have our Selection. We will have five hours to take our tests. We take so many tests. Tests that will alter the rest of our lives. Tests that will decide our entire future. "Hey, Turtle." Blaine walked in, interupting my thoughts,"You do realize we aren't kids anymore. 'Turtle' is a nickname for a 10 year old." He looked surprised,"You were fine with 'Turtle' a week ago." I sighed,"Well that was a week ago and I was never fine with it." He sat by me on my bed,"Okay, fine...hey I bet you can't tell me what today is." I looked up to meet his eyes,"It's June 10th, 4023." He tilted his head and laughed,"No, silly. It's your birthday!" I looked back at the floor,"Yeah, I know."
"What's up with you? You love birthdays." I scoffed,"No I love your birthday and only because you love your birthday and it's contagious." He scooted closer to me and whispered,"Would it make you feel better if I told you I got you a present?" I spun to face him,"Really?" He rolled his eyes,"Of course." He pulled a box little box out of his pocket and handed it to me. I slowly opened it to reveal a gold necklace with a little turtle charm,"So I got it before I knew you had a problem with the name." I smiled,"It's perfect." He helped me put it on, as soon as it was clipped on the alarms started to go off, and we both sprang up and started for the door before Blaine stopped me,"Don't forget to tuck it into your shirt. We don't need to start something with the guards." We weren't allowed to have personal possessions outside of our Residence, but there was no way I was taking it off.
We ran to the Meeting House and were surprised when there weren't many people there yet. Blaine, being himself, immediately went around and asked questions. No one knew what was going on,"Blaine, what do we do?" He looked around," I guess wait for an Aged shows up?" Ageds' are people that have already taken their tests and have jobs, most are taking care of the kids in different Residences',"We can't just wait.." As I finished the doors and windows slammed shut and a hologram came onto the screen, it was the Supervisor, the tippy top of the food chain here,"Hello, Juniors. I am Supervisor Moseley. As many of you know you have tests soon that will decide your futures. What you don't know is that your test are not in a isolated room where you answer questions like you thought." I froze. I had studied these test for years and now I'm being told that I spent all that time on nothing. I was starting to freak out. I start to hyperventilate and Blaine grabs me hand and squeezes it, letting me know he's there. I start to calm down,"You were also informed that your Selection wasn't for another couple weeks....this was also wrong." I turn to look at Blaine. He keeps a firm hold on my hand, the only thing telling me that he's join me in the freakout,"Your tests....are starting now." I stop breathing, my knees go weak, I feel like I'm going to vomit, I bend forward. Blaine now holding my shoulders, keeping me up,"These tests will be nothing like what any of you expected. They will be dangerous, they will test you to the limit, and some of you," he pauses and hesitates,"I'm not going to lie to you, some of you may not even survive." The previously quiet room has now exploded in volume, kids are crying, yelling and trying to get out of the building. Now yelling, can he hear us, the Supervisor continues,"I know this is a shock and I know you are scared." I'm standing straight up now, I'm furious, and yelling,"Stop! Everyone stop!" I'm not loud enough, but Blaine is,"Everyone stop now!" Everyone freezes and I walk to the front by the hologram. Everyone staring, he continues to talk, normal now,"This Selection will test everything you are as a person to see if we have a place in our community." I peer at him,"Can you hear us?" He freezes then continues,"Whatever happens, keep in mind that.." I look around me,"Can you see us? Are you watching us, Moseley." He immediately retorted,"It's Supervisor ." I could see the regret in his face, stunned. The few times he had been here someone always addressed him as something other than Supervisor he corrected them,"I knew it! Find the camera!" Kids dispersed in the building until a kid yelled,"Here!" Then another,"Found one!" In the next 20 minutes we found 15 cameras,"Is that all, Supervisor?" His face disappeared and a blue screen popped up reading,ASSIGNMENT ONE COMPLETE:
