Prologue

Five Cents

"The twist please. Once." I nod and put a record into the old fashioned record player. "Five cents." The man hands me a nickel, and I insert it into the coin slot. "Thank you." The woman giggles, and the happy couple walks of into the middle of the dinner as the music starts. I pull a nickel out of my own pocket, and when the song ends,I quickly put on Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley before anybody else requests a song. I smile happily as I listen to the chorus of y favorite song. More people come, making more requests. As purple people eater ends,a young boy about my age approaches. "What do you recommend record girl?" The boy glances at the small stack of records on the table beside me. "Jailhouse Rock. It's my favorite." The boy nods and hands me 2 dimes. "Play it twice please." I nod, insert the money into the coin slot, and start the song. I smile as I hear the familiar first chords of the song echo through Kent's Dinner.
