Gulf Shores Alabama isn't a small town , but it isn't a big town ether. Maybe twelve thousand of us here, but no more. Hi, I'm Jackson Lamon and I live in this town. I have my whole life. I'm 17 and living the so called "dream" . Well at school I am... home not so much. I live in a two story house that could honestly use some renovation. But, who would do it? Mom and and her boyfriend Daryl are always working and when I'm not at practice or doing. homework, I'm "raising" my sister Riley. She can't do much herself because, she's six. *Sigh* Maybe one day the house will be as beautiful as the others on the block. Or maybe the walls will cave in in my sister and I.

"Jackson honey, I won't be home tonight. Jessie called in sick so I've gotta take over." Mom said as she poured her morning coffee.

I thought about sayin' 'Surprise surprise' but instead said, "What 'bout Daryl? Is he comin' home tonight?"

She came over and kissed my forehead. "Honey you know he isn't."

"Yeah I know. It was a stupid question."

"No question is stupid you know that," she paused for a second and put her head down. "That's what your father used to always say." As the last word came out of her mouth, a tear rolled down her cheek.

I quickly ran over and hugged her waist. "It's okay mom I miss him to."

It had been almost four years since dad died. He and mom loved each other so much. Their love was the most beautiful thing ever. They were always happy and smiling. Dad went to work at eight and can home at six. He was young and full of energy. We always went outside and played football. And mom well she looked young and beautiful. She always came home after work and did her motherly duties. But, after the accident she slowly developed bags under her eyes and work started to become her main focus. She doesn't like bein' in the house because it reminds her to much of my father.

My dad built this house all by himself. Worked real hard on it, and for a long time to. But one night he didn't listen to mom. He tried to work on a broken electric socket, and well I'm sure you can guess what happened. It killed him right on spot. Mom found him laying on the floor dead. Ever since then she worked and worked. I guess it keeps away from home, away from all the pain in the house . She cries to herself when she's home. I can hear her. She won't admit it but she does. Well, only when Daryl isn't home. She tries keeping it together.

"I know Jackson." Mom said as she wiped away the last few tears. "You better get goin. Have a good day at school."

I ran out the door giving her a thumbs up on the way. The drive to school was pretty short but my thoughts made it seem long. Memories of the good ole days ran wild. I remember when both parents would take off early just to come cheer my on at baseball or football games. Back to when Mom and Dad were both home at night and we ate together as a family should. Now that's dads gone it feels like we've lost both parents. And Daryl's only home when he feels like takin' off work to do so.

I snapped back into reality when the school came into view. As usual, Zayden ran up to my truck as I parked. I opened the door to a smiling Zayden.

"Hey Jackson!" He said excitedly.

"Hey Zay!" I respond as I jumped out of my truck. I swear I love this dude. Best friend since the beginning of forever right there. "You ready for today?"

He playfully roled his eyes. "As ready as I'll ever be I guess."

"Alright come on." I said as I pushed him towards the school.
