"Just remember doing everything according to the plan, okay?", I tell my client Claire.
Her eyes remain fixated to the deflated looking Kevin, her soon-to-be fiance, at least that's what I hope, who is visible from the see-through window of the cafe we're standing outside. If only everything goes according to plan.......
She nods at me absentmindedly so without further adieu, I proceed to the next step.
Fixing my huge hat on my head, that almost covers up my entire face, I turn to Jason AKA my childhood best friend slash my childhood crush but still not my boyfriend because I'm just too shy to admit my feelings to him. I know it's quite ironical that I'm trying to fix someone's love life even when my own sucks but I can't help do anything now, can I?
Jason smiles at me before taking my hat in his hands and fixing it on my head when he sees me struggling with it. His smile awakes those sleeping butterflies in my stomach like it always does and I can't help but smile back at him.
I know, I'm smitten, okay? No need to wave it in my face.
"Ready?", I ask him.
"Only if you're"
"Let's get this over with then, shall we?"
"Yes ma'am", he mock salutes me.
I take his arm and walk into the Square's Cafe that is still open at New Year's Eve. It's beautifully decorated with all the lighting and stuff. The ambience, perfect for Claire's proposal.
As soon as we enter the Cafe, we go straight to the front counter, posing as a couple just in case Kevin recognizes me.
We do as planned. Ordering Kevin's favorite platter of pancakes, giving the letter to the waitress that Claire wrote with her whole heart, which the waitress skillfully hides in the platter.
After that, we order ourselves two cups of cappuccino and take the booth that is within earshot and eyesight to Kevin's booth.
As soon as I take my seat, I sigh only to put my head against the table.
Not after a good sixty seconds, I feel a tap of finger on my head.
I raise my head, only to find Jason looking at me over his cappuccino.
"Coffee?", he asks.
I nod before savoring the amazing taste that relaxes my entire being in seconds.
"So, what's their deal?", Jay asks, referring to Claire and Kevin.
I look at Kevin who has just received the pancake platter and is about to read the letter. My heart rejoices at that and a wistful smile graces my lips.
"Claire was supposed to propose Kevin for marriage today at their date. Everything was going according to the plan when Kevin decides to throw the bomb on our heads"
"What?"
"He has. . . . amnesia. It's like he forgets everything but only remembers her and there's a possibility that he might forget her in near future as per what doctors say. Claire was. . . . heartbroken. She came to my office crying her eyes out. I didn't know what to do. It was like . . . . not seeing a happy ending. I just couldn't let that happen, especially when I had seen their love grow so beautifully over these six months. I just. . . couldn't leave her on her own", I say, taking deep breaths to calm my heart.
Soon after, Jay's hand reaches forward only to grasp mine in his, igniting a series of tingles that inflate my heart instantly.
"It's okay, alright? I understand especially when I've seen you get attached to all those couples that you've made happy and you should know that whatever you're doing is very noble and amazing. No kidding, your job looks easy but I gotta admit it's not, so just be proud of yourself. Even if this doesn't work out because you know, sometimes, maybe some people are really not meant to be together, okay? Maybe Claire will get someone even better and Kevin will too, alright?", he looks at me with expectant eyes.
