his bones ached with fear and anger.
"mike?"
she pondered,
drawing back from the frozen boy.
"you came back.."
his words sounded hollow,
"for us, mike. only for us."
"why?"
he asked sternly,
avoiding eye contact.
his eyes began to burn with raging tears,
but he kept his focus on the ground.
"mike.."
she trailed off,
scratching the back of her neck.
"i know it's been a while-"
"a while? god. do-do you even know how miserable i was? i was in bed every night, crying myself to sleep because i couldn't be with you anymore. i couldn't feel your soft hands against mine. i couldn't hold you tight when i was scared. you weren't here."
he spoke that last sentence in a voice
y/n never knew existed.
she drew back in surprise.
taking a shaky breath in.
"i-"
"just-just go away."
his voice lowered,
and he made his way back to his room.
y/n turned on her feet,
her suitcase dragging behind her.
***
it began to rain hard once mike found comfort in his room.
perfect timing at least.
the rain yelled and thrashed onto his window,
matching his mood.
mike held the necklace y/n had left behind,
and began to fight back tears.
he was tired of crying.
his eyes were raw from the constant wiping away.
he threw the necklace across the room with a loud yell,
then fell to his bed with his head in his hands.
the tear fell down his cheek,
before a knock interrupted him
"hey,"
the soft voice behind the door spoke.
jupiter.
mike sat up quickly,
wiping his cheeks as he looked around his messy room.
"co-come in!"
he spoke,
smiling sheepishly as she stepped foot inside.
"you okay? you seem upset."
mike nodded his head,
taking a quick deep breath in.
"yeah. yeah i'm fine. come here."
he opened his arms for her and smiled as best he could.
the wave of perfume floated through the air,
and it smelled just like y/n's.
***
y/n was staying across town,
in an old motel.
luckily for her,
the owner was a good friend of hers from ages ago.
"stay here as long as you'd like!"
he had told her the night she arrived.
donovan was like her father.
a better one,
at that.
he'd let her borrow his wife's old car,
after he took her to get her license.
he would do anything for the pitiful girl.
"how's that nice boy of yours?"
donovan smiled at the girl as she laid on the squeaky bed,
her nose stuck in a book.
"to kill a mocking bird, huh? good book."
he read to himself.
"mike? oh, no...haven't seen him."
and with that,
the conversation ended,
and her reading continued.
she heard the click of the door behind him,
and the book collapsed onto the floor,
every inch of pain and sting,
spilling out of her eyes.
y/n found herself short of breath,
and knew everything had been ripped out from beneath her again.

in the wheeler household,
jupiter and mike continued to press their lips together in a heated way,
trying to find some kind of spark.
something to keep them together.
mike felt her cold lips against his,
and began to reminisce.
the way y/n's lips moved against his in such a soft way,
in such a loving,
comforting way.
whereas now,
jupiter and mike searched deep down in the closed space,
for something to hold onto.
but mike felt nothing.
not like he used to at least.
