The Unexpected Winner{Short Story}

The Interview

          Today I've done one of the most hilarious things in my life,and now I've to explain to everyone what just happened an hour before

         I dried my face and looked at my shaved face,which had a beard some hours ago

           There was a knock at the door and a lady peeked in

            "Coach David,the press people are asking for you,they want to take your interview, right now"she said

             I sighed"I'm coming"

             She nodded and I followed her

             I was preparing myself to answer the questions the press was going to shower upon me

             My forehead was already wet by the beads of perspiration,which was  a result of my anxiety and nervousness

              Finally we reached there and the lady opened the door

               I walked in and all the people  talking and doing their work were now looking at me,there was pin drop silence in the room

               I looked away from their curious faces and quietly sat on the chairs placed on the stage where my team was seated

                After I had seated,a lady began

                "Good afternoon,Mr. Miller,I'm Rebecca Reynolds from newspaper News report"a brunette stood up and spoke

                 I nodded gesturing her to continue

              "First of all I would like to congratulate you that you won the competition"she mocked holding her laughter

             I looked at her and with disbelief and remained quite

            "So..would you like to tell us why suddenly you wanted to win this competition being a coach?"she asked

           Is there some kind of joke going on?

         "It was not my intention to do that,I jumped into the pool because my beard caught fire"I said deadpanned

         All of them looked at me astonished,like they did not expected this answer

        "What?"she asked bewildered

        "Yes,I lighted my cigarette, my long beard caught fire, I mistakenly poured alcohol on it and the fire increased,so I had to jump in the pool to save my face from burning"I explained

         "Oh"they all said astonished

         I sat on one of the chairs waiting for the final round to start

         I took out a cigarette and lighted it with my lighter

          As I took in a breathe I sensed  that something was burning,I suddenly realised that it was my beard

          My beard had caught fire!

         I quickly snatched the bottle of a man sitting next to me and poured it on my beard

          But it increased the fire,making it touch my chin now

           I realised that the bottle didn't contained water....it contained alcohol!

          My face had started to burn

        Having no other option I quickly jumped into the pool

          I swam and swam to get out,not seeing where I was going

          The commentator was excitedly shouting something on the mic which I could not understand as I was under water

          As I came out I listened to his final words

         "And the winner is...Coach David?!"he said in shock
