Charlotte Burnes shouldn't be alive. Charlotte Burnes should have died in 1846 from an outbreak of cholera in an orphanage in Britain, with no one but her grieving husband and a nearby midwife. As she gave one last glance at the window, she sincerely thought that was it; death was as a part of life that no one seemed to accept till the end came to them. Yet she never did accept it. But it seemed she had no other choice.

But then she woke up. She didn't know how or why, but when she opened her eyes, it was decades later and she was decades younger, still herself except for the world around her. It was a struggle, adjusting to her new existence, but she found that it was far easier than it should have been; as if there was a reason why she had been given a second chance. With a new life ahead of her, she decided to make the most of it. After all, you don't cheat death twice.

Except she did. Over and over and over, she died and woke back up in a different city, in a different time, in some new stage of her life; still herself, yet not really. It seemed that, no matter what, death would not take Charlotte Burnes. So, rejected by death, she decided to embrace life. She did whatever she wanted, illegal or otherwise, watching the world change while she, for the most part, stayed exactly the same. Her life was a whirlwind of changing names and faces, of new lives and lifestyles, new lovers and enemies, and try as she might, she couldn't always remember them all.

Except Bucky Barnes.

Theirs had been a whirlwind romance, Bucky sweeping her off her feet and promising her the world, and she knew better than to believe it, but even decades later, after she had died in a car crash the night he had shipped off to war, she couldn't help but think back to the future he had promised, of what they could have been.

But Charlotte kept on living. She met many people and touched many lives, though she hardly ever knew it at the time. She went through the motions, trying to find something new in life to surprise her, to embrace the world that those in her past would have never been able to see. But always, in the back of her mind, she couldn't help but think of Bucky.

As time continued on and Charlotte left her mark wherever she could reach, she began to realize that death hadn't forgotten her after all, but despite the looming threat over the horizon, Charlotte continued forward, chasing after the hope of reuniting with her long lost past. Hoping that it wasn't too late for a lost girl to return home.
