Chakotay stood on the bridge talking with everyone. He was in command, because his wife was sick. No one knew why she wasn't on the bridge and were coming up with negative reasons, so Chakotay stood to make things straight "Can I have everyone's attention please?" He waited until everyone turned away from their stations, before continuing "As you all have noticed the captain has not been on the bridge for a few days, and I am here to tell you she is very sick...The doctor can't figure out what it is, but it seems to just be what he calls 'the Delta Quadrant Flu' She is in our quarters trying to get some rest, but we don't know how long it will last. It doesn't seem to be contagious, but I still need some of you to talk with me about taking care of Bella, and Kol for a night or two. Kathryn and I would greatly appreciate it." Tom Paris quickly spun around and said "Commander...B'elanna and I would be happy to take the kids for the next few night. We will watch cartoons, and have some movie food...If that's okay with you?" Chakotay shared his appreciation and approval, before he turned the bridge over to Tuvok so he could go check on Kathryn.
Back in their quarters he found that Kathryn wasn't in their bed, or on their couch. He called out to her, but received no response. "Computer...locate Captain Janeway!" He asked aloud. Within a second the computer responded "Captain Janeway is in the Janeway quarters!" He looked around the quarters, and finally saw her laying on the ground by the viewports. "Oh my god Kathryn!" He yelled out while rushing to her side. Her skin was paler than he remembered, yet she was sweating like it was hot in the room. When he reached out to caress her cheek, he found it freezing cold to the touch. "Kathryn? Please wake up!" He pleaded with her, but nothing was helping. "Chakotay to Doctor! Medical emergency! It's the Captain!" He called through his comm badge, and waited for him to get here. "Hold on Kathryn! The doctors on his way."
The doctor materialized in the main room of their quarters with a medical kit in hand. "Commander! What happened?" He asked Chakotay, when he ran to the captain's side. He stammered "I...I don't know. She was fine when I left five hours ago. I managed to convince her to eat some toast, and she drink some water. I was just coming to get her some lunch, but when I got here she wasn't in bed, or the couch. I couldn't find her, and thought she left to go to you. I finally found her here..." He paused and looked down to her face, before telling him "She's freezing doc! Her skin is pale! Yet she's sweating! Please help her!" The doctor was quick to pull out his tricorder and tried to find out what was happening.
Before the Doctor could explain what was going on, they heard a quiet moan emanate from the figure laying on the floor. Chakotay leaned over her and asked "Honey! Can you hear me? Please open your eyes!" She pried her eyes open and was instantly confused at why he was looming over her. Chakotay calmly asked her "Honey? Do you remember what happened?" She pushed herself up, but only had enough strength to fall against Chakotay. He shifted his own body, so she could lay against him. "I woke up feeling worse than I had...My throat is scratchy...I got up out of bed...I was really cold...I walked over...to the chair...to grab...the extra blanket..." She stopped and shivered, so Chakotay pulled her further into his embrace while the doctor grabbed the nearby blanket. The doc draped the blanket over the captain, before telling them "Well Captain...I suggest we get you back into bed. I'll give you something for the fever." Chakotay picked her up and started walking towards their bedroom.
She let out a pained sigh when he laid her back down on the starfleet issue bed. "I know its uncomfortable Kathryn, but it's necessary for you to get better. The crew misses their Captain! And the kids miss their Mommy!" Her face lit up at the mention of her children. Chakotay had taken up a lot of responsibilities since she had fallen ill, but thankfully the ship had not come under attack recently. "How are my babies?..I miss having them here.." She said exhaustedly. Chakotay continued to fill her in on how her family was, until she was asleep.
As soon as Chakotay made it to the bridge he knew his day was going to get worse. Suddenly the ship shook slightly, causing him to call out red alert. His sole concern shifted to the ship. The battle only lasted about 5 minutes, but left the ship without much power. All the lights throughout the ship were off, with no chance of turning back on. Chakotay turned the bridge over to tuvok and decided to head towards engineering to see if he could help Torres get the power back up and running. When he turned a corner he heard labored breathing, so he cast his wristlight across the corridor. Neelix was sitting in a corner huddled up with a blanket and was freaking out about the fact that they had no light. Chakotay managed to convince him to go with him to engineering.
They rounded a corner and suddenly they saw an alien standing their. It seemed to anger at the sight of the light and rushed towards them. Before they could do anything to retaliate an orange beam hit it. They turned to look at where the shot had come from, and found the captain standing their in her uniform (with her jacket open). Chakotay approached her and said "Kathryn! What are you doing out of bed?.." She cut him off by saying "did you really think I would stay in bed...while you work your ass off?" Neelix ran up to the captain and threw his arms around her crying out "thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You saved us captain!" She didn't mind the hug, until he wouldn't let go. "See Chakotay...Neelix is grateful that I came along...Now follow me..." He wrapped his arm around her waist and gave her a quick kiss on the temple, before grabbing Neelix to make sure he stays close.
She lead them to a storage space and had the two men grab this large container like thing, before telling them "Now let's get to engineering...You guys need help carrying tha?.." Chakotay cut her off by saying "NO!! Since you are insisting on staying out of bed, I will not allow you to waste energy. Understand?" Neelix almost bent over laughing when he saw the glare that the captain was shooting towards the commander. Eventually her glare softened, and she told him "Fine, but if I sense that either of you are struggling i'm stepping in...Got it?" Now it was the commanders turn to throw a glare back at the captain, but he learned (in the past 2 years) that she was not going to take "no" for an answer. He let out a long and frustrated sigh, and responded "I think that will work." She smiled, before walking out into the darkened corridor. Before Neelix could take a step; he was stopped by the commander who told him "Neelix i'm telling you this one time...Do. Not. Show. Any. Sign. Of. Struggling. Got it?.." He agreed, and Chakotay finished "...I just don't want her to get any worse than she already is, so I would really appreciate your help." Neelix smiled and told him "I would never do anything to make her more sick, believe me Commander." They shared a laugh, before the Captain came back in saying "Hey! Come on...We need to get this to engineering." The two of them quickly followed behind her. She used her phaser rifle as a source of light and protection, so they could see ahead of them.
Meanwhile in engineering, B'elanna was getting annoyed that she couldn't get the power back on. She had yelled out to a ensign to try something new, when the doors were pushed open by Captain Janeway. She yelled out "Here this will help..." B'elanna noticed what she was talking about when Chakotay and Neelix walked through the doors carrying something. "Up here! We'll hook it up to the main generator directly." She called to the new group of people that came into engineering. Chakotay and Neelix hauled the machine up to the second level of engineering with considerable difficulty. Once they had it hooked up the lights in engineering came back on; letting the Captain and Commander gain communication with the bridge. Tuvok was filling the captain in on what was happening, and mentioned that there was a ship off their portbow. Chakotay could still see her pale skin, and knew she was probably feeling like shit. Secretly he contacted Neelix to check on his children, but wasn't getting a response. Momentarily he was sent into panic mode, but that quickly dissipated when the doors to engineering blew open.
Neelix came running in with both his kids clinging to him. He slowed down when he got close, and knew Kathryn hadn't yet noticed them. He saw that Bella was looking right at him, so he managed to secretly point towards Kathryn. As soon as her eyes caught her mother she yelled out "MOMMA!!" and tried to squirm out of Neelix's arms. Kathryn's eyes lit up with glee at hearing a voice that she hadn't heard in weeks. Chakotay walked up next to her as she turned around and saw her babies. Isabella decided at that moment to launch herself out of Neelix's arms and fly towards her mother. Both of their hearts dropped, and everyone froze. Kathryn quickly caught her, and squeezed her tightly against her. "Oh Bella!!." She sweetly said, while giving her a quick peck on the cheek. Chakotay wrapped his arms around Kathryn's waist seeing as though she was caught off guard by his daughter giving the whole ship a stroke. Neelix brought baby Kol closer to his family, so that the Captain could see him sleeping peacefully. She bent down slightly to give her baby boy a kiss on the head. "I'm so sorry Captain! Commander! She wouldn't calm down for me. I think she is scared of the dark." They both nodded, and turned their attention to her. Kathryn spoke softly to her asking "were you scared of the dark sweetheart?" All Bella did was shake and nod her head. Chakotay asked "What is it my darling?" She looked straight at her mother and father and tried to talk clearly "Kol...I...miss mommy! We...wore...worrid...aboot...her.." The two commanding officers pulled her into a tight bear hug, before Kathryn spoke "Don't worry Bella...Mommy is just fine...Okay?" Chakotay added on "Yeah Bella, don't worry about mommy..." He cut off and leaned closer to whisper in her ear and told her "...that's my job!" Kathryn heard it and playfully smacked him on the back.
Everyone who was in Engineering at this moment knew how special the command team truly was on this ship, and that even though it may take a long time to get home it still can feel like home.
