The Last Summer

This is the summer of the cleanest dew,

Of the softest lawns,

The hottest sun,

And clearest waters...

This is the summer of the loudest booms

Of the fastest songs

The brightest lights

The tastiest food!

This is the summer of blisters and chafing

Of zooming cars and adventures unplanned

Of piggy banks overflowing with doubt,

Of the constant struggle

Between stuffed animals

And dorm furniture.

This is the summer of last chances,

Fragile as tufts of dandelions,

And just as weightless

When raised by autumn's chill.

This is the summer of airport farewells.

With smiles plastered with false bravado,

I'll close my eyes and hold you here

Till summer's rays of light

Shine in your eyes again.
