ashton stopped going home a month after calum saw the bruises.

he never gave an explanation until one night when they sat on the window, legs hanging out as they stared up at the stars.

"they were always ashamed of me. to them, i was the perfect definition of a problem child." he tilted his head up high, sighing. "i cared. from the beginning, i cared about the kids on the street who had no home to go to. i cared about everyone. i always questioned why we were so fake, so self centered a-and they hated it. i was always happy. i would smile at people. i wouldn't fake liking a person because i had ulterior motives. they hated that. you could say they hated that i had humanity in me."

ashton swallowed the lump in his throat and calum grabbed his hand. "i lost that humanity, cal. i became different. i became a mixture of the fake me and the real me but somewhere along the line, i lost the real me, too. i met you and i think, i think i found me again." his voice dropped to a hushed whisper towards the end.

he spoke as if it was a secret and all calum could do was pull him closer and lay a kiss on his forehead.
