~Her Soldier~

Fragments and pieces lay upon the unkempt floor.

Too many to put together once more.

For two years, she had waited for her soldier to come through the door.

Until today, he said he loved another more.

Forgive and forget. A life lesson she was taught to believe.

Did she listen? Of course not, she wore her heart on her sleeve.

She was ready to give up, give in, and run away.

But she saw an angel flutter by in the middle of the day.

The angel gently smiled and reassured her in a calming tone,

"Starting tomorrow, you will NEVER be alone."

With a bit of hesitation, she promised the angel she would wait.

The next day came and went from dusk till dawn.

Night fell upon her dwelling eyes because the day seemed so long.

The woman packed her bags and wrote a note to say goodbye,

Telling everyone when she is gone never to cry.

Slowly she opened the door to leave but just as fast,

Tears poured down her face she stared and gasped.

She found her lover leaning against the wall.

Smiling the best he could trying not to fall.

Her knees and luggage dropped to the floor.

Watching him cry too as he stood by the door.

The mighty war had taken his leg.

The captain gave him a purple heart for his wooden peg.

He stood against the door and cried and cried.

He told her there was never another; he felt sorry that he lied.

He told her it was an honor to serve, but he was afraid to come home.

He said, "Please don't leave me, I never, NEVER want to be alone."
