Cody's the one who found the orb. Him and Pikalus wanted to find out what it did so he used it. It turned him into a monster, and allowed him to control these monsters.
Joe fights against him until he manages to convince Cody to join him to stop them. Cody, knowing the damage he caused, agrees and they both draw power from the Nexus.
