( chapter 13: The Sweet Hereafter )

JASMINE MCCOY a famous name that you hear around the small town of Riverdale. Being that her mother is the mayor, and her sister is in a group called Josie and the Pussycats.

It was a regular morning for Jasmine, she did her daily routine of waking up and taking a morning walk to Pops for some breakfast. Since her mom got elected for mayor to her it seemed like she neglected her duties as a mom. She's never home and when she is she's only there for an hour or two until she's sneaking off in the middle of the night somewhere. Times like this Jasmine began to think that she was more of an adult then her mom. Knocking on the door of her Josie's room she heard a soft voice say, "Come in."

"Hey, I'm heading to Pops for breakfast you want anything," Jasmine asked. After Josie declined wanting anything, she made her way out the door and into the crisp morning air and began her walk after deciding not to take her car.

The sun just began rise creating different hues of red, orange and yellow along with a faint tinge of purple. Purple had to be the younger McCoy favorite color hence why she decided to dye her hair. When she made the decision to use the purple dye her mom went off on a tangent about her decision. Although, as time progressed she became used to the color, as well as, her mom. The sun began to shine on her rich brown skin making it glow, along with the purple in her hair becoming more vibrant. Jasmine really was proud of the melanin in her skin and the glow it created when the sun was shinning down on her.

Seeing the familiar glow of the Pops logo she walked up the stairs and into the dinner hearing the chime of the bell. Looking around the diner was empty besides two other people and Pop. Pop Tate was the owner of the diner that is the heart of Riverdale called Pop's. He was what made living in Riverdale bearable with his famous milkshakes and burgers. Looking closely up at the other people she noticed it was the infamous Archie Andrews and his father.

Archie and Jasmine have known each other since preschool. They became really close to each other with the help of Betty Cooper, the blonde ponytailed gem of Riverdale. As time progressed the three of them became the trio along with Kevin. Being friends with each other for a long time she knew about the crush the Cooper girl held for Archie. Even though the two never dated she couldn't help but to love Betty and Jughead together along with Archie and Veronica. Although, Jasmine did not like the Lodge girl at first because of what she did to Betty she held a little grudge but got over it as soon as she redeemed herself. As she neared closer to the two guys sitting in the booth, Archie began to walk away.

"Good morning Mr. Andrews." Jasmine greeted brightly with her famous one dimple smile.

"Morning Jasmine and how many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me Mr. Andrews, it's Fred since we're practically family." The girl couldn't help but smile at his answer.

Family was something that she wouldn't know about. Her life has been surrounded by their mother being in the mayors office and trying to live up to her expectations. Even her own father has became a distant memory to both Jasmine and Josie. To her it seemed like her mother favored Josie more than her but that's not the case. Even when some parents probably favor one child more than another they always say I love all my kids equally.

While Jasmine was caught up with the thoughts in her head she couldn't hear the chime of the bell indicating that another person has entered the dinner. Until she turned her had to see a man in a black mask screaming and holding a gun towards Pop Tate's head. With her eyes on the verge of tears and wide she turned towards Fred who was shaking his head no; as he slowly began to rise up from the booth.

Looking towards where he was looking she say Archie with a cast on his left hand. The masked man seemed to notice this and began to make his way towards Fred raising the gun in his hands. Just as Archie ran towards the guy in the mask his eyes pleading not to shoot anyone one shot went off. A single bullet went through and gazed the arm of Jasmine McCoy and into Fred Andrews.

People will look back at this as the exact moment that last bit of Riverdale's innocence finally died, and darkness won. Marked by an act of violence, that was anything but random.
