Though, it may be a small country in contrast to others, Ireland has a wide variety of tales that vary from the story of creation - as described in the previous chapter - to the Children of Lir. In this chapter, I'd like to talk about the mythological creatures and beings in Celtic mythology, rather than a legend or myth (though we'll definitely get back to them, don't worry).

In this chapter, I'll be telling you about the top 10 most popular, commonly known mythological creatures from the small, green island of Ireland.

— BANSHEES
Banshees are the more commonly known creatures that originated from Irish mythology, not just in Ireland but worldwide. We see the tales of the banshee being used as storylines for characters like Lydia Martin from TV shows such as Teen Wolf, and for other purposes.

When someone mentions a banshee, the first thing that pops into your head is probably a picture of a ghostly woman with long, white hair and her mouth open in a scream. Well, you're not wrong.

Banshees are infinitely known for their bloodcurling, spine-chilling screams. Legends says that if you hear a banshee's scream, you or one of the people you love are going to die.

Now, this isn't proved to be actually true, but many people say they heard a shrill scream before finding out later that a family member or friend had died (though that could be a mere coincidence, and the scream could have come from anyone's drunken aunt who's had a little too much whiskey to drink and fancies herself the new and improved Beyoncé).

The wailing woman is also said to either appear as an old, haggard woman wrapped in a cloak or a beautiful enchantress.

Some people also believe the banshee is a fairy, while others believe she is a ghost of a specific murdered woman or a mother who died in childbirth.

It is often said that the banshee only laments to those (unfortunate enough) to be descended from the pure *Milesian stock. These peoples surnames often begin with O' and Mac/Mc.

— LEPRECHAUN
The most popular of all the mythological Irish creatures, the Leprechaun is a renown trickster who is known for collecting gold and hiding it in a pot at the end of a rainbow.

According to the myth, if you are fortunate enough to catch a leprechaun, he must grant you three wishes before he can be released. (Where can I catch one these guys? I could use a new laptop and a total do-over with every aspect of my life).

During the twentieth century in Ireland, the Leprechaun was depicted as someone who wore red rather than green as many believe. It is modern now to include or describe the creature as green with a red beard, it was burrowed from other folklore and that is how the modern Leprechaun was created.
