Accents

So the people that came here in the late 1400s to eventually found the US were mostly European or Asian (eventually), correct? Well then if they all spoke different languages, and all ended up speaking English, why is it that we don't still have British or English accents? The people that didn't originally speak english had their own accent, so why didn't it end up British or English? How did we fade to what is now the American Accent?
