Haibun: Elevation

We climbed the Middle Sister, a seemingly endless upward journey where the words level, downhill, and easy have no meaning. At the penultimate we rest, only one more stage to the summit remains. It is time to set up camp, swim nude in glacial waters, prepare food and sleep. A friend and I slip away to a ledge of pure obsidian and sit down to dangly our legs over the cliff. Below us is a sheer drop of over one thousand feet; it is very soothing for our souls.
Timberline has come
Frozen waters, and high times
Reveal nature’s peak.
