Lance and Keith sat silently in the car, the sound of the rubber wheels against the concrete road and the quiet radio in the background filling up the empty space. Keith cleared his throat slightly, it felt hoarse and dry. Glancing sideways at Lance, who was driving his blue beat up car, focussing on the road. His hands tightened around the steering wheel as he took a deep breath.
Keith tensed up, as he trailed his eyes back to his window, looking at the passing scenery. He felt so awkward around Lance, it was embarrassing. Ever since yesterday morning, the first day of the new year, Lance had started to distance himself from Keith, and he didn't know why. Keith tried to reach out multiple times but Lance kept silently refusing. Ever since they said their goodbyes and got on the plane, Lance had been silent, beside small sentences. And Keith was getting fed up with it.
The not so pale anymore, sunburnt male sighed out his frustrations, and glared at his reflection in the window. He finally gathered his courage and spoke out in a small tone, "What's up with you Lance?''
Lance flinched, Keith could see it in the mirroring reflection, the latino cleared his throat and opened his mouth slightly as if to answer, but nothing came out. Instead he slumped back against his car seat, rubbing his temple with one hand.
"Not right now, 'kay?'' He spoke out after a while. This took Keith's full attention as the raven-head turned in his seat facing Lance as much as possible. "I gave you enough time already. Tell me,'' Keith more demanded than asked, his patience was running thin with this boy.
"Fine, you really wanna know?'' Lance grumbled as he glanced at Keith swiftly and then focused back on the road. Keith nodded, humming an agreement. "I've been scared okay?'' Lance spoke out harshly, breathing out a heavy sigh.
Keith was taken aback, "W-What?'' He slightly stuttered, his eyebrows forming a frown, as he huffed out an aggravated breath. "Why?'' He followed through.
"Just-, never mind. It's stupid.'' Lance rolled his eyes, tapping his fingers against the leather steering wheel rapidly. "You're being stupid right now so I can handle it. Did you make another assumption?'' Keith said in a sarcastic tone but he calmed down, the look that was plastered on Lance's face was one that Keith had seen many times when Lance had gotten jealous, he knew that look.
"It's just that,'' Lance stopped his finger tapping and ran his hand through his hair pushing back his bangs trying to stop them from tickling his forehead. "What if-," He seemed to struggle with his words, "What if all this was just a vacation fling?"
Keith raised his eyebrow in disbelieve of what he just heard, Lance glanced at him with the corner of his eye, "What?'' Lance asked followed by an uncomfortable, breathy, nervous laugh. "Seriously?" Keith tried not to snap at him, "Seriously Lance?'' He repeated while trying to keep his calm.
He took a deep breath when he saw the frightened look on Lance's face. "Can you just-," Keith tried to find the right words, "Just stop making assumptions? Lance you've been ignoring me the past day, the last day just because your stupid brain thinks that was 'just a fling'? Are you kidding me?!" Keith ended up raising his voice slightly, followed by Lance flinching at his tone.
"I, I just-," Lance started to panic, this is exactly why he didn't tell Keith about his thoughts, "No Lance! Stop thinking for me! Unless you feel like it was just a fling? Is that it?'' Keith felt the familiar feeling in his chest, it swelled up and he felt nauseous, his eyes starting to sting. After all they've been through Lance is pulling this? He understood Lance was very insecure despite his open flirty personality but still, Keith didn't know anymore.
"No!'' Lance's voice pierced through Keith's raging thoughts and everything went quiet. "Never. I genuinely love you Keith, I still am falling in love. I'm sorry, I- You know I overthink too much and-" Lance took a sharp breath, Keith noticed the tears brimming his eyes, "I'm sorry for these past days," his hands tightened around the wheel again, "I shouldn't have, but I'm just afraid, we're back in 'our' world, what if you find someone better than me? What if you get tired of me? What if-" Lance was blurting it all out, everything he had been holding back the past day, all his worries, all his thoughts, they were spilling. But he was Interrupted by soft lips on his cheek as his entire body posture relaxed, he sniffed quietly glancing at Keith.
