What You Taught

We were there, on your desks.

We were there, on your walls.

We were there in your lessons,

And your tall lecture halls.

When they gave you their efforts,

When they ventured: "What if...?"

When you handed them back,

When you told them: "dismissed".

When they thought they were stupid, or foolish to try.

When they thought it was their fault, they needed to cry.

So why do you tremble, and run away so?
We've only come here to repay what we owe.

We're only your words;
we repeat what we hear!

We teach what we're taught,

And what you taught-

Was fear.
