Monday morning. In Moondrop City. The first day of freshmen year. My name is Sasha Doleman and I'm going to be attending 9th grade this year... or well... right now. I look down at my blue backpack straps then up at the high school doors. This is a lot worse than I expected... I felt my knees wobble. I turned away from the door and looked around for my friend Dillan. Dillan and I had been friends since 6th grade and now we were attending high school together. I saw a checkered backpack by the fountain in the courtyard, which I recognized as his. I walked over to the fountain and looked for his brown hair in the crowd. I saw him talking to Jennica the popular girl from middle school. I walked closer and heard their conversation,
"Hey Jenicca."
"What do you want Dillan."
"Your looking good today."
"No Dillan the answer is no.
"I haven't even asked anything."
She rolled her eyes,
"Do you love me?!" He asked desperately. Exasperated she walked away without answering.
I tapped him on the shoulder and he jumped, "Oh my fricking god!"
"Jeeze calm down it's just me!" I held up both hands like I was being arrested. I looked over my shoulder. "Your bag is about to be soaked." He looked at the fountain and almost screamed. A Star fragment with water power was manipulating the water to hover over his backpack. He charged over to the bag and as he was about to grab the bag the water dropped soaking his bag. He frowned and snapped his fingers. A small glowing flame sparked from his fingertips he carefully dries his bag with the flame. He reached into the bag and pulled out a soggy notebook. His face showed disgust as it fell apart between his fingers. He pulled out all the paper and carried them to the trash. He then dried the rest of his bag and turned to me. "Well that's a replay from middle school." I smiled remember the same thing had happened the previous year on the first day. "When are you going to show your wings?" I had been dreading the question and now he had asked it. "Well... I'm not sure... you remember last year." I frowned last year I had showed my wings and kids ended up plucking my feathers leaving a bald patch. "This year kids are more responsible, I'm sure they would t pluck you this time." I thought about it for a second. "Also you've learned some tricks to help!" He added hopefully. "Okay fine! But If people start pulling feathers I'm putting them away.", "Sounds Great!" He responded. I took off my backpack and closed my eyes, I breathed in deeply and felt internally for my shoulder blades. When I reached them I rolled them slowly. Then I spoke softly to myself:
A summer wind,
A shining star,
My wings of wisdom,
My flying hope,
Of feathered dreams...
I felt a tingle In my shoulders. When I opened my eyes and looked at my back my huge beautiful wings were there. I tested them, by fluttering gently. A soft wind came from them as they moved. I looked at Dillan who was staring at them in awe. He did this every time and it always made me feel warm inside. Before either of us could say anything the bell rang and the doors opened. All of the students rushed to the door cramming in at. I looked around nervously and kept an eye on my feathers. A brown haired boy walked up and ran his fingers over my feathers. I flinched and jumped into the sky out of instinct. My large wings beat in unison as the boy looked at my wings his eyes full of curiosity. I flew over a few people then landed next to Dillan. "What happened?" He asked. "I kind touched my wings and I freaked out." I explained quickly. "Here do that owl thing and I'll carry you in." He whispered. Embarrassed I nodded then pulled my fingers around me creating a sort of room. I closed my eyes and began to sing softly:
A form inhuman,
A shape peculiar,
A different form,
Something smart,
Something wise.
I felt my body change and when I opened my eyes I was shorter than before. I looked around my head spinning almost in a full circle. Dillan gagged, "Please don't do that. Its wierd." I spun my he as d back around and fluttered onto his shoulder. "Now to class!" He spoke like a pirate and I twittered (laughed) at him and I spoke my voice calm and rich. "A smart one he is." He laughed and walked through the doors.
