"are you almost finished coloring?" i asked my best friend tanner
"no not yet. i cant find which color i like the best!" he said looking through his crayon box
"here do this one! it's pretty!" i said, picking out a turquoise crayon
"i love it!" he replied while he started coloring

8 years earlier...
"hi mom!" i said as i got into her car with tanner following me
"hi mrs. allen!" tanner said as he got in and closed the door
"can tanner come over so we can work on a project?" i asked her as she pulled out of the parking lot at the school
"yes of course hun!" she said driving along the road towards our house

7 years earlier...
"i'm really going to miss you" i said as i saw tanners family come out of their old apartment building
"me too, nicole" he said as he pulled me into a hug
"i know we're only ten but i love you so much tanner. please come visit me?" i said to him and i felt his muscles tense. they then relaxed after he let go of the hug
"i promise" he said
"tanner honey! come on we're leaving!" kim, tanners mom called him over
"well by-" he started to say but i cut him off
"no goodbyes please? how about a see you later?" i asked him
"well then, see you later" he said and pulled me in for a quick hug and ran over to their car. i watched as the car drove away, as i stood there, on the sidewalk, with a tear running down my face
