Dear Daddy

The letter arrived 2 weeks late,
But he thought it was worth the wait.

How he smiled at the sight,
Of the shabby envelope he held so tight.

His shoulders slumped as he sat leaning against the boulder,
Holding the envelope out pulling his gun closer.

He shut his eyes and saw her face,
Bright and beautiful as always.

He held the letter close to his heart,
Feeling her presence near.

And felt time go by,
As his memories became clear.

He opened it slowly and there it was,
The most perfect letter he had seen.

A green crayon this time he smiled,
Looking at the letter from his 5 year old child.

It read:
"Dear daddy,
Mommy tells me you have gone to fight.
You have gone to fight so I don't feel the fright.
You have gone to fight bogeyman that scares me at night.
I am not afraid of  bogeyman anymore.
You have to fight no more.
Please come home tonight.
Just like you did before."

He shut his eyes,
Wanting to hold her tight.

But he had to fight,
To save her from the bogeymen that would cross the LOC tonight.
