You woke up early in the morning, jumping out of bed and smiling wide. You ran to your window and opened it, nearly running to your balcony. A few white pigeons flew away, awakened from there slumber. You giggled at there behavior and looked down to find Manolo and Joaquin pretending to fight with sticks. You saw Manolo's guitar slung over his back, its bright red caught your attention and you began to smile big.
Joaquin looked up at your balcony and smiled. He jumped up and waved his sword in his hand. Manolo looked up and blushed from your adorable nightgown you wore. He looked down and went back to his guitar.
"Y/N, you coming!" Joaquin yelled.
"Yeah, be down in a sec!" You yelled.
You ran down to your dresser and got your favorite skirt, it was a little large for you,but you wore it anyway since it looked good on you. You quickly brushed your now curly hair and brushed your teeth. You ran down the stairs in your flats, your father glared at you slightly and asked you to come over by him to talk for just a second. You already knew you were in trouble from sneaking out yesterday on the day of the dead.
Your father picked you up and set you on his lap as he ate his Mexican breakfast tacos and some Spanish black coffee, with some milk, brown sugar, and ice. He took a sip and spoke in his raspy voice. Your father fought in the war of Cinco De Mayo and he was never the same since after the civil war was won by Mexico, thankfully.
"I must consult with you about your behavior, you must stop this savage like behavior, Y/N. You are nearly 11 and you need to learn how to become a lady. not a tom boy like many other girls here are in San Angel. Please be on your best behavior, Y/N while you are with Manolo and Joaquin. And remember to have fun." Your father replied kissing you on the forehead.
You returned the kiss on his cheek and he smiled. You jumped down from your father's lap and ran outside.
"Y/N!"
You sighed and ran back inside, you grabbed a frosted churros and ran back outside. Manolo and Joaquin looked at you and smiled. You noticed something glowing on Joaquin's shirt but didn't have time to ask him what it was when something else caught your eye. You smiled and ran over to the little pig. His eyes were large and he was the pinkish shade of pink with the curliest tail for a baby pig.
"Your so cute!" You squealed.
You heard the slicing of knives and turned your head to see a man sharping knives and the bubbles of boiling water. You glanced at the sign and gasped loudly which startled Manolo and Joaquin, making them stop abruptly 5 feet from you. You turned to your friends and pointed to the animals in the pen.
"We have to free the animals!" you yell.
They looked at you with different expressions on their faces. Manolo smiled wide, while Joaquin looked troubled. Joaquin replied with a simple "what", Manolo just stared at you, his smile growing by the second. Manolo didn't believe on killing animals, after all he only ate Nacho's and no meat tacos, just thinking about the word killing was unbearable to him.
"Come on, guys! We can do this!" I yelled encouragingly.
I raised my sword and brought it down with all the strength I had, breaking the chain that held the animals in there confined space.
"Y/N!NO!!!" Joaquin yelled at the last minute, but it was too late you already broke the chain. You looked at your friends shocked expressions planted on there faces, you just smiled as the pigs ran out the pen, you grabbed Manolo's hand and Joaquin's and jumped on a pig. You looked at them and they were smiling big. You entered the towns square and ran over your father as you and your friends flung into some fruit baskets.
You heard the thumping of hooves and looked from where you came, then the beast like pig charging after your father. You yelled out to warn him, but Joaquin jumped out of the basket and pushed your father out the way, you gasped along with Manolo and the town. The pig stopped and pushed him with great force, but Joaquin only skidded to a stop in the same position he was in.
The whole town gasped and you saw a hue of green pinned on his shirt. Joaquin smiled and used his vest to cover it. You looked at the creature who was about to charge a nun with a chicken on her head. You and Manolo looked at each other smiling. You jumped to your feet and found a red scarf on the floor, Manolo took one from a lady in a green and yellow dress.
You and Manolo stood side by side holding the red pieces of fabric in your hands. "Toro!" You both replied with glee as the beast charged at both of you. At the last minute you dodged the attack, Manolo sliding to the side. I caught a glimpse of Manolo's father smiling at us in the crowd, his gold and green stood out above all the rest.
You smiled as you dodged more attacks from the large hog. Manolo and you jumped up and landed on different sides. Manolo and you laughed as you continued to confuse the creature. Finally you and Manolo were facing the agitated beast. It's eyes glowing with anger, it moved his hoof back and forth as it began it's last charge.
"You ready senorita?" Manolo asked as he looked at you.
"The question is are you ready." You replied smiling.
You both looked up and saw the hog charging forward. You both waited until the time was right and turned slightly as the bull brushed past you and the pieces of fabric. The beast eyes widened in surprise as it slammed in the concrete wall. Making the wall crack slightly as it fell limp, unconscious.
"Are you alright sir?" I heard Joaquin replies as he helped your father up.
"Thankyou Joaquin you have saved my life!" General Posada replied, placing his old fingers on Joaquin's shoulder, making Joaquin cringe as he peered down at them.
Manolo ran up to Joaquin's side and began to speak on saving them from the bull with you but your father shushed him every time he tried to speak. You grumbled under your breath a few Spanish curse words as you walked over to your father.
"YYYYY/NNNNNN! You're in so mush trouble! You need to become a proper lady." Your father yelled.
"Why?" You asked him.
"I'm a sending you to Spain! The sisters there will straighten you out!"
"But I," You started then you glanced over to the side of you to find Manolo's guitar split in two .
You gasped and ran to it, you picked it up and stood.
"Manolo's guitar!" You replied holding it tight.
"That's final young lady now go home!" Your father yelled.
You felt the tears well up in your eyes as you looked at your friends. You held the guitar tight in your grasp before running in the direction of home. You cried all the way home, slamming the door shut as you entered the home. You entered your room and locked it shut. You sat on your bed for 30 minutes crying into Manolo's broken guitar.
You whipped your tears and placed the guitar down and pulled out your suitcase from under your bed. You started to pack for tomorrow, after you finished packing you came out of your room and sneaked out of the house with a hundred dollar bill in your hand.
You ran to the instrument store and asked for a red guitar, but there was none. You looked around and found the perfect one. A nice shiny guitar with a skull a heart and some bull horns at the bottom that held the strings. You bought it for fifty dollars and ran with it tight in your grasp as you went home.
You snuck back to your room with the shiny new guitar in your hand. You pulled a box out and wrapped a red bow on it. You carved on the side "Always play from the heart -Y/N". You smiled and placed it inside and put it away with your suitcase. You got ready for bed and imagined Manolo's face when he sees his present, you fell fast asleep thinking of when you return spending time with your two bestest friends in all of Mexico. Maybe even the whole world.
