"Trust me Chase, I'm no stranger."

"If you're not a stranger then who are you?" I asked, still confused.

Just as I spoke, Rose walked behind me. "What's going on?" She asked. "Who's this?"

"That's what I'm trying to figure out." I said. "He says I know him, do you recognize him?"

"She wouldn't recognize me." He shook his head. "Nobody in your family would."

"And why is that?" I questioned.

This guy seems shady.

"Look, Adeline, I promise I'll explain everything once you come with me. I'm not a serial killer or anything okay? Scouts honor." He raised his hand.

"Wait a second, you want her to come with you?" Rose furrowed her brows. "That's not happening. You can explain who you are right here."

"Yeah." I agreed.

"Damn it Chase, if you ever got your memory back you'd kill me for saying anything in front of your family."

"Saying what?" I raised my voice a bit. "Please, I'm confused enough as it is.. Just tell me who you are and how I know you." I almost begged.

I was tired of this. Tired of being in the dark about literally everything. All I wanted was a normal life with people that I knew. I would say having amnesia was the worst thing that ever happened to me but the problem was.. I didn't even know if that was true.

"Fine." He sighed, looking at the floor.

Rose opened the door wider and gestured for him to come in, which he did. Sitting down, he began to explain.

"My name is Jake Warren. Although, you always preferred to call me Jacob." He smiled slightly. "You and I work together."

"And where is that?" Rose inquired. She knew where I worked, she was just trying to see if this guy was telling the truth.

"We work at a publishing house." He replied. "That is what she told you, right?"

"Yes, that's where I work." I cut in. "That's where she said I work." I gestured towards Rose.

"Yeah, well.." He seemed to be debating whether or not he should say these next words. "That was a lie."

"What?" Both Rose and I said in unison.

"What do you mean that was a lie? Why the hell should we believe you? And if it was a lie, then what's the truth?" Rose was starting to get irritated. He ignored her.

"Adeline," he turned his attention toward me. "You said that you told one other person. It was on some late night and I'm pretty sure I was drunk. I don't even remember his name." He threw his head into his hands.

"I think his name started with a D." He seemed to be whispering to himself. "That's all I remember."

"Wait, Derek?" I wondered what it could be that was so bad. Apparently I only told my brother.

"Derek! Yes! I knew you could remember!" Jake's entire face lit up.

"Who's screaming my name?" Derek entered the room.

"You're Derek?" Jake asked.

"Yeah, who are you?" Now it was Derek's turn to be confused.

"I'm Jake Warren. Please tell me Adeline told you about me." He put his hands together like he was praying or something.
