ACT 1
SCENE 1
(The setting is at night, in a hospital room. Stage light dim. The Patient is sleeping on the bed. The only source of light is from the window, moonlight shining in. The Patient wakes and sits up)

The Patient
(confused)
Where am I?
(Looks around and realises she is in a hospital room.)
The Hospital?
(Looks at the bandages wrapped around her.)
I'm injured?
(Puts hand on head as if trying to remember something.)
What happened to me?
(Short Pause)
I can't remember anything, anything at all...
(Tries to remember.)
Who am I?

(The Nurse comes in quietly, she starts walking over to the patient, not noticing that she is awake.)

The Nurse
(Quietly)
Pardon me...
(Notices that the patient is awake. She is surprised.)
Oh! You're awake! I'll call the doctor right away!
(Hurries off the stage.)

The Patient
(Sadly)
I can't remember what happened, or anything about myself. Nothing at all...
(The sound of a clock ticking is silently heard in the background. Stage lights go off. A spotlight is shone on the Patient.)

The Narrator
(Offstage,Emotionless.)
A High School Junior. She lives with her parents and younger brother. She met with an accident on the way to school. Her life was saved, but there was a chance she would wake up with amnesia. And that's exactly what happened. It's possible she will never get her memories back.

The Patient
(Deep in thought.)
What...what am I supposed to think? How should I pass time? Should I talk to someone? Read a book? Take a walk outside? Or just think?
(Pause. Then the Patient puts her hand on the side of the bed. Desperately)
I don't know what kind of person I was. It's only been a few hours since I came to, I'm empty!
(Clenches the blanket with the fist on the bed. Scared)
Empty...
(Falls off the bed by accident. Sighs and puts her head into her knees. Starts crying softly.)
Ahh...
(Stage lights go on.The Nurse hurries onto the stage to help The Patient.)

The Nurse
(Worried.)
Are you all right?
(Comforts The Patient)

The Patient
(Sad and quiet.)
Nurse, I... I'm afraid of knowing myself.
(Looks up, with a scared expression.)
What was I like before?

The Nurse
(Soft)
It's perfectly normal to be distressed.
(Helps The Patient onto the bed.)
People came to see you while you were unconscious. Why don't you try asking them to tell you about yourself?

The Patient
About myself?

The Nurse
Yes, so don't worry and rest up.
(Tucks The Patient into bed. She takes a chair and sits next to her.)
I'll stay with you until you fall asleep.
(Stage lights dim and the moonlight is shining in again.)
