LUKE HEMMINGS
We have lunch in a restaurant I've been to a million times before, but Sophie treats it like it's some big deal. She tells me not to pay so, of course, I do. And she tells me that she's okay making her own way back to her dorm room- I ignore that, too.
"Seriously, Luke," I can practically envision her eye roll, the way her pupils just about miss the tops of her eyelashes regardless of the fact that she's walking in front of me, "I'll be okay,"
"I know," I say, unlocking the passenger's side of my car, "But still. Get in,"
"You don't need to baby me, you know,"
"I'm not babying you,"
"Is this what you do for all of your new friends?" she quips, eyebrow raised, but she gets into the car anyway. "Because if so, God only knows how well you treat Ashton,"
"Like a fucking King."
"I bet,"
I can't lie, my face is twisted into a smile, but I wipe it off as soon as I get into the car. Knowing Sophie, she'll never be able to let it go; teasing me for being anything but stoic seems to be a favourite past time of hers. So naturally, I try to avoid getting into that situation as much as fucking possible.
"Now that we're friends," she announces, like it's some big thing, like it's normal to announce your status with someone.
Nevertheless, I let her do her, figuring it wouldn't hurt to keep my mouth shut and my snarky comments to myself for once.
Well, there's a change. But maybe it's for the good. Maybe it's for the best I'm not acting like the same asshole I was a few weeks before. Character development, as Ashton had called it that one time I didn't force him to do eight shots in a row; opting for six, instead.
"I get five free questions to ask you and you have five to ask me."
Raising an eyebrow, I take a peek at her from the corner of my eye, wondering whether this girl's being serious or not. "What, like anything?"
"Anything. From deepest fears to guiltiest pleasures-"
"Define a guilty pleasure,"
"I don't know," Sophie shrugs, her gaze falling towards the window, "Things you like doing that you shouldn't like doing,"
"Like...?"
"Anything, Luke. That's the whole point,"
"Like speaking to you?"
Suddenly, I feel a thwack on my arm, "Rude!"
"Kidding," I smirk, arms outstretched with my hands on the wheel as Sophie cutely crosses her own in a huff, "But okay, I get it. What's a guilty pleasure of yours then, Hayes?"
"Huh?"
"Come on. Five free questions. I'll start," I say, "What's your guilty pleasure?"
"I asked you first,"
"But I'm taller than you,"
"You're taller than everyone," she notes, eyebrows raised, "And that's not relevant!"
"Just tell me what your guilty pleasure is and I'll stop,"
"I don't have one,"
"You must,"
"But I don't,"
"Bet your search history says otherwise,"
"What?!"
"Come on," I chuckle, loosely reaching for the phone in her lap, "Let's see what incognito tabs you've got opened up, yeah?"
"Shut up!" she all but whispers, slapping my hand away and pressing herself up against the door. I let out a loud laugh, being careful to maintain my focus both on the road and the squirming girl next to me, "And I know what you're implying- I watch very vanilla porn, thank you very much,"
"Woah," I sit back, putting a hand up in the air to mock surrender, "Who said I was talking about porn?"
"What? You di-"
"I just wanted to see what kind of dumb shit you had in your search history," I chuckle, shaking my head. I'm not even looking at her fully, but I already know that there's a blush on her face and she's on the verge of lunging over and smacking me so hard that the car swerves off of the road, "But nice to know you're vanilla, Hayes. Nice to know,"
"Pull over."
"Oh, come on-"
"Pull over," she huffs once more, swerving her entire body to face away from me.
"We're in the middle of a freeway-"
"I don't care. I'll get run over- or worse, I'll walk,"
I pause, raising an eyebrow at her in both amusement and bafflement, "What?"
"What?"
"You think walking's worse than possible death?"
"Walking is death, Luke, don't get it twisted." she mutters, unfolding her arms and sinking back into her seat. I have to roll my eyes; it's unbelievable what this girl comes out with sometimes.
"Sure, sure," I mumble, "But just to let you know- I'm not pulling over."
We sit for a while in a comfortable silence, one that's masked with the quiet hum of the radio. I try not too think too much of the absolute hell I'll have to endure once we get back on campus; both from my father, and from Ashton.
"She's not just another one of your callgirls, Luke," I remember him rolling his eyes, crossing his arms and leaning against the pool table; a cue stick in one hand and the chalk of it in the other.
It had baffled me at that moment in time because of two things; one, Ashton has no idea how to actually play pool and two, the last time we did, he almost got stabbed with the stick and has been calling it a human kebab maker ever since.
"Your dad would kill you. Then Alice would kill your dad. Then your dad would come back from the dead to kill you again for making the love of his life kill him,"
"I think you're being a little overdramatic,""
"Am I?" he scoffs. I ignore him, "Just be careful, yeah? Don't make a fool out of this girl just because of something her mother did. Or didn't do. I don't know," he sighed, "You're a dickhead and a prick but you're not a monster,"
"Charmer."
"Cheers. Been working on it,"
"That explain why you're still single?"
He'd chuckled at me then, the cue stick being pointed in my exact direction, "So you're a sarcastic dickhead and a prick. Lovely,"
"Just hit the ball, already," I shook my head with a sigh, "It's your go."
