Joe
I watched as Charlie led her away and suddenly I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. She looked really nervous as she looked back at me. I smiled to let her know that everything was going to be ok. The doors shut behind her and my gaze dropped to the floor, my smile gone.
“You ok?” Kevin asked. I nodded.
“Just worried about her.” I said quietly. Ashley sat next to me, rubbing my back gently.
“She’ll be alright.” Nick said reassuringly.
“Thanks, guys.” I smiled half heartedly. We all just sat around and waited for her to be done. After a few minutes Charlie came out.
“Joe-can you come with me?” He asked. The secretary gave me a visitor’s badge and a bracelet to get through. We entered her room and she was lying on the chair looking extremely pale. I went and stood next to her as the nurse came back in with a very large needle. I instantly felt a bone breaking grip on my hand. I smiled and moved closer, taking her hand comfortably. Charlie was playing with her hair. The nurse tied a rubber band around her upper arm. Chrissie watched as the needle got closer t her arm.
“Chrissie.” I whispered. She looked at me and I wouldn’t let her look away. I began to hum Awakening by Switchfoot quietly. A few seconds later she was done.
“Alright. We’ll just run this through and be back as soon as we can.” She said pleasantly. Chrissie closed her eyes and I saw a tear leak out of the corner of her eye. I gently brushed it away.
“That’s not allowed.” I whispered. She half smiled. “What’s wrong?” I asked quietly. She was ok the last time we were in a hospital.
“I’ll be right back.” Charlie said. I nodded, barely looking at him. He walked out the door, gently shutting it behind him and she moved over slightly so I could be next to her. I gently sat down and looked at her.
“What’s the matter, angel?” I asked quietly.
“What if something’s wrong?” She whispered.
“It won’t be. You’re perfectly fine.” I said firmly. She looked at me, unsure. I leaned in and lightly kissed her. My heart skipped as her lips touched mine. I loved that feeling. I pulled away but her eyes remained closed. I waited a few seconds before I leaned in and did it again. Her hands touched my face lightly, leaving tingles wherever they touched. I pulled away again and she sighed.
“You’re mean.” She whispered. I chuckled.
“And why is that?” I asked, smiling as she played with my fingers.
“Teasing me.” She said closing her eyes.
“Do you feel better?” I asked and she nodded. “Then it worked.” She looked at me. I held her gaze for a few seconds before the door opened and the nurse walked in. Chrissie closed her eyes resignedly and I got off the chair.
“Alright, sweetheart. I need you to drink this for me so we can get you out of here, ok?” She sad sweetly and Chrissie nodded.
“What’s it for?” I asked.
“So we can get a CAT scan to see if there’s anything wrong.” She said patiently before walking out of the room. Chrissie looked at me wide-eyed and I smiled. The container was huge for one person to drink. She put the straw in and took a sip.
