"You're runner up." the assistant told me.

Yes, I was at the NYU talent show. And I was going to sing. A song. Dedicated to  my one true love, Annabeth Chase, or my best friend ever.

The girl in front of me, a nerd named Tristan, recited the first two hundred numbers of pi.

He got off and I went up to the stage. I took the mic and smiled to the audience. "Hi, I'm Justin Krenshaw and I'm going to be singing a song to you guys. I'll be singing Hey, Soul Sister  by Train, Train."

I took a breath.

Hey, hey, hey

Your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brains

I knew I wouldn't forget you, and so I let you go and blow my mind

Your sweet moonbeam, the smell of you in every single dream, I dream

I knew when we collided, you're the one I have decided who's one of my kind

Hey soul sister, ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo

The way you move ain't fair, you know!

Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do, tonight

Hey, hey, hey

Just in time, I'm so glad you have a one-track mind like me

You gave my life direction, a game show love connection we can't deny

I'm so obsessed, my heart is bound to beat right out of my untrimmed chest

I believe in you, like a virgin, you're Madonna

And I'm always gonna wanna blow your mind

Hey soul sister, ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo

The way you move ain't fair, you know!

Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do, tonight

Well you can cut a rug, watching you's the only drug I need

So gangsta, I'm so thug, you're the only one I'm dreaming of

You see, I can be myself now finally, in fact there's nothing I can't be

I want the world to see you'll be, with me

Hey soul sister, ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo

The way you move ain't fair, you know!

Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do, tonight

Hey soul sister, I don't want to miss a single thing you do

Tonight

Hey, hey, hey

Tonight

Hey, hey, hey

Annabeth told me to meet her backstage; she had permission to be there, she even asked the principle. But even if she didn't, she was on student council, she'll be fine.

"Justin!" Annabeth cried.

I turned and smiled at her. She lept into my arms, grinning. "You did so good!"

I pulled away, "I did?"

She nodded eagerly. "You really did?"

"Wannahangoutatmyhousesometimelikeonadate?"

Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "In English, please. Or Greek." she added as an afterthought.

Did I mention Annabeth was fluent in Greek? Oh and really beautiful too...

I took another deep breath. "Do you-"

I was cut off when Annabeth smiled. Like a genuine, happy smile. I didn't see many of those. She must have known I was going to ask her out.

Then a blur knocked her over and I instinctively cried out. But Annabeth was giggling. Since when does she giggle?

"Percy!" she laughed.

The guy was chuckling. He stood and helped Annabeth up. I raised an eyebrow.

"Oh!" Annabeth said. "This is Percy!"

"Who is...?"

Can you blame me? I want details! "My boyfriend."

What? I'm your boyfriend! I thought.

"Excuse me?" I heard Perry say.

Oops. Maybe I didn't think that.

Annabeth's eye were glaring, an anger brewing in there that I'd never seen before. "Excuse me?" he repeated.

Oh no. I was in for it. "My boyfriend?"

"You were supposed to be mine!"

Part of me was screaming something along the lines of Stop!--and the other half of me knew it was hopeless and just didn't even bother. "Yours?" Annabeth scoffed.

"Do you even know her?"

At that my mindless body flew into another spasm of rage. "Woah there, Mr. Perry. Do you even know her? I've known her and been her bet friend for three years. Ever since college started!" I bragged.

Percy only laughed. "I've known her since I was twelve." he boasted.

"Pfft. I bet you've only known her for twelve days!"

Annabeth, who had been standing next to Percy, observing our little charade, now jumped in. "Oh really?" she asked coldly.

I looked at her, betrayed. "Percy is my best friend. I have known him since I was twelve. He is my boyfriend. For real. And he means the world to me. I-I wouldn't be me without Percy."

She stuttered a bit on the last part, something I didn't often hear her do. Percy kissed her forehead. "I love you, Wise Girl."

"Let me think about this. Do I love do you?" she joked.

Percy grinned wildly, leaning in to kiss her.

And that's how I met Percabeth.
