A New Beginning

Dropped out of the Planeptunian college and got a job as a bike courier. Mostly just to piss off Mom. I was actually the best in my class before I got really bored of it. The package delivering business was a bit more taxing than I thought. I caught up pretty quickly though. In reality, I was the man I always wanted to be. Someone you'd never notice. Just some guy delivering stuff to folks you'd never know. Today was like any other day. I was about halfway through my route when my phone rings. I tap my earpiece, picking up.

-"Hel-" I was cut off.

-"COLE! Why aren't you attending your classes again?!" Mom yelled.

-"I'm working, why else?"

-"What you call a 'job' is nothing more than a glorified slave service! You don't even drive a truck like every other delivery company!"

-"That's because I'm more local than- Fuck! Red light, asshole! Ugh, anyway, that's because some jobs aren't worth taking the truck and so they send me out."

-"Cole! Why can't you be successful like your father? You were one of the best in the College of Planeptune, for crying out loud!"

-"I don't care if I'm smart, buff, handsome or whatever else you want to call me. I'm doing what I want with my life. This is Gamindustri, people do this all the time."

-"AH!! That's it, Cole! I'm not even trying with you anymore!"

-"You say that every time you call..."

-"Well, this time it's real!  Have fun, Cole! With whatever the fuck you want to do with your life! UGH!"

-"Bye then."

-"Goodbye, Cole."

She hung up after that. Man, that was fun. These kinds of calls aren't rare. Although, I think she's serious this time. Which means I won't be getting rage fueled calls from her anymore. I could call Dad, but I doubt he'd help me. Just tell me how to be super efficient on quests again rather than actually help. In any case, I tapped on my earpiece again and some music played while I delivered. After a couple hours, I was finished.

-"Better head home, nothing else planned tonight." I thought.

I pedaled until I reached the front of my apartment building. I locked my bike on the rack and was about to enter when I heard a familiar voice.

-"Hey, Cole! Hold up a second!" I heard Cam yell behind me.

Cam was a courier like me, he was the guy I went to parties with, drank with and told about my family. I was a bit surprised that I had received a package. I only get deliveries when I actually order stuff myself. He reached into his bag and pulled out a decently sized, worn out box. This wasn't from the company I worked at.

-"Why is it so beaten up? Did you drop it like all the others?" I asked jokingly

-"Why is it so beaten up? Did you drop it like all the others?" I asked jokingly.

-"Nah man, the guy that gave it to me already had it in this condition. He paid me well and used your name so it's not a mix-up, I'm sure." Cam said.

-"Alright then. Thanks, how much did he give you anyway?"

-"Uh, 95$ I think."

-"You think you could split that?" I smirked.

     He laughed before answering.

-"You ass! I'll see you tomorrow. Just be thankful you don't have the night shift!" Cam said jokingly, pedaling off.

I waved as he left and entered the building with my package underarm. I entered my room using the key and threw the box across the room onto the counter for later. My jacket was comfortable so I kept it on, but the shoes came off.

-"I'll open that tomorrow. No rush." I thought.

Throwing on more comfortable clothes, I threw myself onto the bed and reached for my phone in my pocket. Time to call my step-sister. I entered the number and heard the other end ringing. My step-sister, Emily, picked up soon enough.

-"Onii-chan?" She asked on the other end.

-"Emily, I've told you already that you can just call me Cole. We're not in Lowee, you know." I said.

-"I know, but I'm still not going to. You're my onii-chan! And I'm your super cute little sister!"

Emily originally didn't have a brother in her family until her father met my mom. She's taken a liking to calling me 'onii-chan' since she's still in high school. I don't mind, really.

-"So how's it going at home?" I asked.

-"The usual, Mom's worried about you and Dad's still working." Emily said.

-"You mean my Dad or your father?"

-"Oh right, my father. He's fine in general. You never did find out where your Dad went, did you?"

-"No, I guess not."

My Dad got really deep into the monster hunting business before he left on a quest one day and never returned. I'm sure he's r.i.p.-ing in heaven.

-"But you know, Mom always says she's had enough of you on the phone...but she still really worries about you. And you know I do too." Emily said.

-"Yeah...I know." I said.

Emily was different from Mom. She somehow manages to know exactly what I'm feeling at any time. With my Mom, I like to piss her off for her reaction. But with Emily...I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I let her down. She's always been there for me, even when Mom wasn't. Wait...that's it!

-"Hey, Emily." I almost shouted.

I could hear the shock in her voice.

-"Y-yeah, onii-chan?" Emily asked.

-"How about we head out on Saturday, two days from now? We'll go wherever you want and it'll be the weekend, right?" I asked.

-"R-really?! I would love that, onii-chan!"

-"Alright, then I'll pick you up Saturday morning. Sound good?"

-"Yes! You're the best, onii-chan!"

-"See ya then, kiddo."

-"Bye!"

There, that should be fun. I mean, it's not a date or something like that, but it'll still be fun.

Emily P.O.V.

-"It's a date." I thought.

Cole P.O.V.

I hung up and plugged in my phone to charge before laying on the bed. Maybe a day off is what I need too. I looked over to the clock to see it was only 8:27 PM. I decided to go to bed early. Might as well make it through my quota quickly tomorrow to have time to prepare for Saturday.
