Part 2-The Battles

Jax's hearts pounded hard enough to slam a hole in his chest. The two weeks of practicing fighting and spells he'd been through could never have prepared him for this. He didn't want to admit it, but he  was terrified. They were inches away from an enormous battle, and they would be tunneling right under it. More than anything, he felt insanely guilty for dragging Ollie into this. If not for Jax, then he would be with Kayla, safe and away from it all.

But no, he was here with Jax, prepared to die for a cause that had nowhere near as much hold on him. He tried to console himself by reminding himself that; of course, Kayla and Gilly would never have sat quietly while all this went on.  Which instantly terrified him. The sheer logic of it. Gilly was probably coming after him right now, ready to throw a punch right in his face. He knew he could take her anytime, any place, but something about Gilly beating him up scared him, if simply because he was her boyfriend and she was more in charge of him than he of himself.  Of course that was far from true, but Jax was Jax.

He was so busy worrying about Gilly and how quickly she would break down his barrier that he didn't even hear the commander's call to arms. Swirls of dark magic cracked across the sky, and both armies surged forward to face each other. Jax had tried not to spare Rumpelstiltskin's army any looks before, but now he could see clearly the legions of kids and adults dressed in black and green, swaths of fabric wrapped around their mouths.

Jax and Ollie's commander had ordered them to tunnel underneath Raz's castle. Jax knew the best place to tunnel in was under the servant's quarters, but when he volunteered this, he'd had to make up some story about working in the palace before the war.

Their commander was none other than Professor Wolfington. Jax and Ollie were still pretty surprised that he hadn't noticed either of them. Perhaps he had, and was lying low, but either way, Jax was grateful. He raised his hand now, ordering them to bring out their army-issued wands. Jax, Ollie, and the company began muttering the spell for disappearance over and over, watching as the dirt vanished, slowly forming a large hole.

Just as Ollie was about to climb in, a burst of green light hit him in the chest. Jax screamed and grabbed him, hoisting his friend over his back in terror. A green-clothed kid was running towards them, gripping a black staff.

Before he had time to react, an arrow came out of nowhere. The figure crumpled to the ground.

Jax braced himself, gripping his own wand (which he could barely use) and felt the surge of adrenaline rush through him.

He gaped as a girl in a messy pair of jeans with a pale blue t-shirt ran up to him, her light brown hair unbrushed and wind-swept. Her beat-up combat boots were smudged with glossy black mud, and she sported a purple bruise on her left cheek.

"You're welcome." Gilly muttered, gripping her bow and arrow fiercely. "Get out of the dirt and follow me, Jaxon Porter."

Kayla and Jocelyn flew across the battlefield, sticking to the sidelines as warriors ran at each other. The normally immaculate dirt roads were thick with sludge, blood, and black mud, thanks to Rumpelstiltskin's violent storm.

"Where's Olivina?" Jocelyn complained loudly, dangling from Kayla's arms. "She should be fixing this cursed weather."

Kayla grit her teeth, having to shout to be heard over the impending thunder. "I told you, Jocelyn. She disappeared after taking down Alva. Devin told me all about it."

"Who the hell is Devin?"

"Language." Kayla muttered, thinking of Devin's stubborn expression that practically matched Gilly's, and her language to match Jocelyn's. Devin was amazing. She was basically Gilly as a princess, but blonde and a little on the ditzy side. Her boyfriend Heath was devilishly handsome but also something of a sweet-talker, delinquent, and cusser. Alva forbid he and Ollie ever met. Kayla had met her over a pen pal program three months ago, from Devin's friend Sasha's scroll company. Sasha had paid a lot for dirt on FTRS, and Kayla and AG were eager to hear more about what went on at RAR. Jax had always just laughed at them when they asked about it, and told them it was just boring.
