Of mice and men- different ending

Alternative ending

George raised the gun and steadied it , and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. When he was about to pull the trigger , all of the memories that he had with Lennie came flashing into his head. That one time when he promised aunt Clara that he would always protect Lennie looked the clearest. He put the gun down. Lennie looked at George with confusion in his eyes. He knew that the men were after him that he didn't have much time before they find him
" Why did you put the gun down George " asked Lennie. George was as confused as Lennie. Why didn't he pull the trigger, why isn't he strong enough to just kill him
and make everyone's life easier. But he knew deep in his heart that he loves that man too much to kill him.
"I can't do it. I can't see you die. Now. Listen to me Lennie. These men wanna kill ya and we ain't wanna that right ?"
"Right George. I ain't wanna die."
" You will run as fast as you can to the nearest forest and hide until I come and get you. You understand that Lennie? This is very important "said George ,hoping that the plan that had already formed in his head wouldn't go wrong.
" I understand that George" answered Lennie with fear and understanding in his voice.
"Good. Now. Run Lennie. Run." Lennie ran as fast as he could, not looking behind him. He entered the forest and looked for the place to hide. He found an old tree; that was broken in half. It was enormous. It was at least 20 feet long and 10 feet wide. Perfect for a huge man like Lennie.He remembered what George told him. He would stay hidden until George came to get him.
George looked as Lennie ran deep into the forest. He knew that this was probably the last time he would ever see him. He had lied to Lennie. He wouldn't come and get him. He pulled the trigger of the gun. The birds that were seated on the branch of the tree flew away scared of the loud noise. The fast steps of people could have been heard. The men rushed to the bank of the river . When they got there ;there was a big surprise waiting for them. There was no body. However they have definitely heard a gunshot. Slim looked at George. He was kneeling right next to the river and looked as he was looking for something there.
"What happened here George?"asked Slim
" He took Carlson's gun." answered George
" You took it from him and shot him ? We heard a gunshot"
George looked up and looked right into Slim's eyes
"Yeah. That's what happened.
"Where is the body though? We ain't see no body?" asked one of men in suspicious voice.
"He went down to the river. It took him. "
"A man's got to do what a man got to do. You did the right thing.
Let's go boys "said Slim
The men left. George looked back at the river. He knew that he wouldn't see Lennie ever again. The sheer sadness came to his heart. He stayed there for just a couple of minutes more and went back to the farm.

From that day onwards he never saw Lennie again.
