Since the school was founded in the 15th century, a lot of the inspiration came from what was called "Renaissance Magic". The education system is based on the seven artes magicae. However since the student population increased during the renaissance period, the "Conseil Parental" and the Professeurs needed a solution to arrange the multitude in students.
First of all, the students are divided by age, over six years of education. Afterwards they have the possibility to continue their education for one more year in one specific area of magic. Since that still leaves a great number of students in each year, they are also divided by the element that represents each student the most. These are the four "houses" of Beauxbatons although they are called "les familles". Each of these houses are also provided by extra classes to increase their gift for their element, focussing on performing magic within their characteristic.
There are no outwardly signs of each Famille as unity is deemed more important, concluding that every student wears the exact same perriwinkle blue uniform.
