"How can you be so certain, Matt?" Steele asked, circling him.
"I've been to all the morgues. She's not in any of them." Matther said seething through his teeth. How could he have been so stupid. He didn't want to kill her, he was planning to propose just days after he had been harangued into leading her to something she wasn't supposed to witness, let alone keep her there. He felt sick as his hands went around her neck. He knew she thought he was going to kiss her. He was going to, then Steele's guys jumped in and started to beat her. Once he yelled to back off, that he'd take care of her, they did. They backed off and let him. He took her to the side of the room and tried to console her and as she relaxed, he had to do her in in order to survive himself. His captain was going to be viciously mad, possibly it would cost him his job and credentials. Even get himself arrested for killing an innocent. "Is there any chance she's been moved by one of your guys, Steele?" He asked, knowing what would happen if they couldn't find a body.
"None of them went back, Matt." He said. "You know what this means."
"If I don't find a body, you'll use mine to replace hers. Sir." He'd done it before. His men could end up conveniently missing, if they couldn't fix the problems they've created. It doesn't happen very often, but... .
"Right. And no one want's that to happen, Matt. You're one of the best men I've ever had the opportunity to work with." Steele stopped in front of Matther with a sneer on his face, placing a hand on Matther's shoulder. "Find her Matther Benson, or as they say, you'll be taking a swim with cement galoshes."
Matther didn't react to the last statement. He had always been afraid of dying. Getting into deep cover had amplified that fear, but getting 'in' with The Electrician had been good for the precinct. As far as Steele or any one of his men didn't know who he really was. "Even the hospitals with Jane Doe's have guards on them, Steele. I can't stake out all of them at once. The soonest one to be released will be in four days."
"Well, I suggest you figure it out. Soon. Matt." Steele said within inches of his face. "You may go now."
Matther turned to leave and on his way out, Steele asked him. "Matther?"
He didn't turn around, only stopped, as he bent his neck down to the side of the direction of Steele's voice.
"I pay you enough, find somewhere nicer to live, if you get out of this." Steele laughed an especially sinister laugh as Matther left the new warehouse.
