Pine
After a long day's work, I loved coming back to the house. Camp was always hard but today seemed to go on forever. Jeremiah was on my back again, sometimes I just wish I was home, wherever that may be. As a walk into my house with my brothers and sisters I started to get a weird feeling like something was about to go wrong. The floor was grass so I took off my shoes and flopped down in my bed. Then I got that weird feeling again like I was slowly
drinking poison.  I closed my eyes pretending it was not there.
"That's it!" I yelled at the ceiling.
I got up so fast I got dizzy from the green walls. Looking around the room I saw eighteen empty beds. Wait? Eighteen that can't be right there
was only supposed to be seventeen. My feet hit the grass floor as I got up out of my bed. I wondered why there was an extra bed. Then I got my answer. Laying on the light green blankets was a girl I had never seen before. I looked down at the name tag as that weird feel washed over me.
"Elfowl," I said out loud watch made the girl in the bed move in her sleep.
"So, this is what the other campers might when they said people just appear." I now had one answer to my many questions. I have lived at Camp Element for about a month and I still had no idea who I was. The only thing
that I know was my family was killed in a fire, I only got out because of a black hole that took me to this place. I looked down at the girl remembering my first day, it was horrifying. The people I now call brothers and sisters were not the best at filling me in on how this place worked. I let out a deep sigh, I didn't want
this girl to feel the same way I did.
"No!" The girl yelled as her eyes flew open.
I fell back lading on my back in the soft grass. The girl's brown hair fell over her pale face as she quickly looked around the room. I stood up
brushing off the grass from my back.
"You're okay. I am a friend." I said trying to calm her down.
She brushed the hair out of her face, so I could see her bright green eyes. They were racing around the room as if she was looking for someone.
"Where is he?" She asked me.
My reply was something smart like. "What?"
I had no idea what she was talking about or who he is. The first thing I said when I woke up was where am I not where is he. Maybe she was just a little confused.
"The man!"
Well, that helps so much. "What man?" I asked trying not to scare her.
"The man that took my brother!"
She tried to get out of bed. I did my best to stop her, knowing that she would most likely fall on her face. From what I have been told when people usually wake up they are tried for at least two days. I know I was.
"Let me go! I need to find him! He must give me my brother back!"
She punched me right in the face, and once again I fell into the grass. I moved my head just to see two feet walking across the room. Well so much for not being able to walk. As I stood up she was already out the wooden door at the far end of the room.
"Come back!" I yelled after her.
I felt the need to go after her, not knowing what I was doing my feet were out the door. My eyes looked around the yard, but I couldn't see her. Then out of my eye, I saw someone dressed in all black. My heart skipped a beat.
I ran up to Jeremiah to stop him from finding the girl.
"Hi," I said to him not knowing what I was doing.
He raised his eyebrow at me like he was wondering why I was talking to him. Jeremiah always scared me with his dark blue eyes that almost seemed black. He was also about two feet taller than me which did not help my
nerves. I was about to walk away when I saw a girl with long brown hair running at Jeremiah at full speed.
"Elfowl," I said under my breath. Why I said it out loud I had no idea.
He raised his eyebrow again and started to turn around.
"Wait!" I yelled grabbing onto his long black coat. I thought I was going to die from the look he gave me. I let go. As I saw Elfowl run right
up to him.
"Where is he!" She yelled slapping Jeremiah across the face.
I am positive the whole camp froze and gasped. No one touched Jeremiah much less slap him. I have to say I was impressed and scared of this
girl. Jeremiah however just let out a small laugh.
"My sweet Elfowl. Whatever do you mean?" He asked looking down at her.
"I remember you! You were in my home when my parents were killed! You saved my brother and me just to take him away! So where is he!" Elfowl screamed I could almost make out tears.
"Child." Jeremiah placed his hand on her shoulder. "It could not be helped. I could only take one. I choose you." He then turned a walked away like he solved the problem.
"What!" Elfowl screamed as she fell down in tears.
The rest of the campers just stared for a moment when left Elfowl crying on the ground. I had no idea what to do, but I had to do something. I walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Come on. I will help you back to the house."
"I just want to go home." She wrapped her arms around me and started to weep into my shirt.
"I feel the same way." She looked up at me with wide eyes.
"You do?" She asked.
"Everyone here does. Jeremiah saved all of us, but none of us had the choice to be here. Jeremiah picks who comes, when they come, and even their name." I said to her.
Her eyes moved with every word. I sat down in the grass with her, and together we watched campers walk across the lawn and into the house. The sun was starting to go down, but I didn't want to leave Elfowl alone, so I
stayed with her until the sun was gone and the stars came out. Elfowl let out a big yarn then closed her eyes, her head on my shoulder. I just let out a small sigh. I did the best I could to stand without waking her up. When I got to my
feet I reached down to pick her up. She was a lot heavier then she looked. With a lot of work and burning arms I got her back into her bed. I slowly laid her down and pulled the blankets up over her. When she was sleeping she almost
looked clam. I let a smile come over me as a looked down at her. I slowly walked over to my own bed and did the best to fell asleep with that weird feelings still in my head.
