Two days later

Gabriel

After two days they finally discharged Luke from the hospital. The wounds his father gave him were pretty serious... but definitely things I could help him treat. Both of his ankles were wrapped up, though the one that was already sprained he could somewhat walk on. They gave him crutches to walk on, even though I insisted I didn't mind carrying him.

Another thing I'm grateful for is the fact Luke is going to start counseling soon. Though, to go to therapy you need parental consent under the age of 18... they are obviously making an exception. For everything that Luke has dealt with for years... he needs it. He not only experienced the physical abuse, it definitely took a toll on him mentally. He shakes in fear at the thought of his father, his skin turns snow white and his eyes seem so distant. He sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night and screams. I'm glad I've been staying the night at the hospital with him... of course, the nurses rush in to comfort him, but I usually get him to calm down just fine.

I obviously had to call my uncle and tell him why I haven't been at the church. Melody has already told Kyle and Caleb I'd be gone for a bit.

''Hey uncle Darnell, you got a minute?'' I asked on the phone. He let out a deep sigh as I leaned against the door frame of Luke's hospital room.

''Yeah. Where you been at, Gabey? Kyle's been talkin' to me nonstop bout' the devil's lettuce. He's kinda annoying.'' He muttered. I couldn't help but laugh.

''I've been helping out a friend. He's in a rough condition and he needed some help.'' I almost said in a whisper. He let out a low chuckle, yelling out to my auntie on the other side of the phone.

''YOU HEAR THAT, CHARLOTTE? GABRIEL GETTIN' A PLAY THANG! HE GETTIN' A HEART!''

''It's not like that! He's... he's actually in pain, uncle Darnell-''

''CHARLOTTE! HE BEATIN' THAT SHIT UP!"

''I DON'T CARE DARNELL! SHUT YOUR ASS UP, I'M TRYNA WATCH THIS SHOW! IT'S ABOUT THAT WHITE DUDE WHOS ALWAYS YELLIN' AT THE PEOPLE IN HIS KITCHEN!'' She screamed back at him. I couldn't help but growl impatiently as they began to argue on the other side of the phone.

''Uncle Darnell, it's Luke. Luke Ivy. The preacher's son.'' I yelled at him. He instantly went silent, ignoring the yells from auntie Charlotte.

''Mmh, I heard about that. I'm sorry about all of that, Gabey. You take care of that boy, you hear? It's nice to hear you're bein' nice.'' He said to me. The word gets around quick... of course, they wouldn't include me in it. Not only are the people in Luke's church absolutely fucking insane, but they also leave anything about black people being kind out of their daily equation... plus they simply don't like me.

''You're not angry about me spending time with him?'' I asked him. He let out a deep sigh.

''Gabe, your father and I go way back with Luke's father. We used to be friends, actually. His parents didn't know about it, of course. We saw him go each day turnin' into somebody who he didn't wanna be. His parents beat him into bein' a cold-hearted bitch. We were like those fuckin' superheroes with their enemies, besides with religion.'' He explained to me.

''What I'm tryna say is... I know how bad that old, sick fuck could be. I know how bad he could be, he's probably fuckin' worse than what I have in mind. But no matter how much he was beaten and shaped into bein' the perfect 'Christian' man, it gives him no excuse to hurt his babies. You understand, Gabriel?'' He rambled. He was right.
