Knees (A poem about awkward dating)

I think it's tacky and just a little unrefined

The way you swirl that straw around your drink

And though those smiles you wear can never be defined

They curl so nice around that shade of pink

And I just love the way you cannot keep your stare

When your eyes wonder up to meet with mine

I can't be sure, but I do think there's something there

Something that will grow and bloom with time

Because this awkward silence that we can't defeat

Speaks volumes through the heartbeats that we share

I'd love the chance to lay the whole world at your feet

And show you just how much I really care

You cross your legs beneath the table as you speak

And I can hear the tapping of your heel

But you don't know just how you make my knees go weak

And all the things you've taught me how to feel

And when you shyly brush your hair behind your ear

The awkwardness alone drives me insane

Because inside my heart there is a voice I hear

That tells me you are worth this kind of pain

Still, nervously you sip your milkshake from that glass

Like you're the one who's heart is on the line

And you can't see your goofiness has kicked my ass

I'd give anything if I could make you mine

So let those goosebumps form just as I reach for you

Because this is a moment we should seize

And as we kiss you'll see how much this feeling's true

It's right there, in the weakness in my knees
